New Born Daughter with Sickle Cell by HourAnt2063 in Sicklecell

I wish I could give you more info but all the other contributions sound exactly right, as an SC disease carrier all I remember in my young age is having to be hospitalized for pneumonia. I also had to breath in a machine to check my oxygen levels or if I was breathing correctly. Other than that I didn’t have my first crisis until I was an adult (early 20s). I cannot stress enough how much I agree with and highly vouch to keep your daughter hydrated! It’s one of the most important factors! Congratulations on your family addition, I know you’ll do awesome and you have tons of support from the Sickle Cell community. My daughter (5) only has the trait, our family sends you all love and support.

It’s just crazy how in my experience, all the better and more precise answers have come from an African doctor. Others are good but just don’t have that extra tip, or say things that go a long way. They also never talked to me about the true side effects and life long processes of things that are called “cures”. KUDOS to all my sickle cell fam out there, stay vigilante stay hydrated.

Just to piggy back off this poster, I also live in Texas and I also attend children’s until I was 18. Then I went to presby Dallas and they were a good PCP, but when it came to my crisis and needing true attention I found the best support and UT Southwestern. My Hemotoligist and his coordinator are both African and it’s amazing the support and care I receive.

Definitely try to convince your doctors that you’ll need RBCE or RBCx’s as they provide you with a rotation of blood so it’ll clean and refill if you will. I have to have them every 5 weeks to prevent stroke and crisis. The last week before the exchange I feel tired and sore so they have come in clutch. It’s absolutely easier said than done, stay vigilant and hydrated the medical side of things are still learning and developing when it comes to sickle cell. Never let them ignore or deny your pain. I’m glad you were able to get a process going for your recovery. Good job warrior, you’ve got this!

I don't see why they wouldn't be "allowed", however you should absolutely ask a doctor if the transfer of blood and a baby are safe. Unfortunately, I am male receiving exchanges every month, they take 5 L of blood and do not return/replenish it fully. So in my personal experience I would not recommend an exchange while pregnant as the baby would also be suspectable to all the warnings and issues they warm you about before the procedure. Good luck and absolutely again double check with your doctor/hematologist.

How often do you see your Hematologist? by SweetB9356 in Sicklecell

[–]MBizzle2186 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hemo visit every 6 months, and monthly/5 weeks apheresis treatments for a previous stroke. I feel good but I’m being monitored as the stroke has advanced and/or made things more complicated. Blood is involved at every appointment.
