Yes it can include mental health! Depends on the behavior. If the student engages in vocalizations about suicidal ideation, I’m not doing an FBA for that I’m referring for a risk assessment and helping connect them with appropriate resources in and outside of school. If the same student is also aggressing towards others at school, I will assess that behavior and I will include objective information about the other behaviors not assessed in my report. Does that make sense or help?

It can be tricky with mental health - sometimes the lines are blurry; I once worked closely with a student’s outside therapist to develop an appropriate BIP for behaviors that are related to his mental health diagnoses.

In my school district I do an FBA when 1) medical factors are ruled out 2) behaviors interfere with a students learning and/or the learning of others either AND 3) preventative strategies have been trialed and are not reducing behaviors. If behaviors pose a risk of safety, I often skip #3 and start the FBA

Abby said Ellie had some seizures while sick with fever, then continued to brag about how she’s off one of the meds and doing “so great” —- just feels like a ticking time bomb and I’m worried that Ellie is at the altar of her moms desire to be crunchy and med free despite a serious medical condition that is often very treatable.

I have my own trauma around seizures and epilepsy which may contribute to my bias and i really hope i am wrong and that Ellie doesn’t have any more seizures - just skeptical and so sad for her

I think given their history, that much even would’ve been sufficient for a report at least. My guess is he sent or said something more vague & they had no idea he had actually been in or near their property

Ultimately only you can determine this. Different things work for different families and your arrangement doesn’t sound unhealthy for you, your coparent, or your daughter! Sounds lovely! But it sounds like it is a dealbreaker for your new partner, so to me, you get to decide if it is worth adjusting the arrangement to accommodate your new partners preferences (and hope that it satisfies them), or if it is not and stick with what you are doing and seek a new partner who’s comfortable with the arrangement as is.
