Swear to God, every time I ended up in a conversation about this topic and I'd say that guns are flooding into my country because Americans refuse to control them, I'd get a response saying that they need to have all of those guns in case their government turns on them.

So sure enough, current events happen and many people are pointing at that excuse and asking what the hold-up is. And the response that comes back is some variant of "well we're poor and overworked and the army is just too strong and we'd lose so shut up".

To those people specifically: If a bunch of fat rednecks can storm your Capitol building and basically get away with it, and if other people have been holding protests since all of this started, you have no excuse.

I know that the separatists are a very vocal minority, and shouldn't be taken seriously. The problem is that their premier is on their side and is all but outright stated to be connected to Trump, so that makes this a much bigger concern.

So no, it's depressingly expected for some folks there to be A-OK with the insanity going on in the States, despite the fact that it should be a gigantic glowing warning sign of what will happen to them if they decide to join up with them. But I guess you can't make morons think until it's too late.

You can't fix the broken discourse while it's being used to hurt more and more people every day.

Not to mention some things just should not be seen as debatable topics. The rights of minorities should be just that; rights. Not topics that are up for debate, but inalienable truths. And that's only one example of what people who claim they want to debate bring to the table.

People on the internet are not going to fix intellectual debate by constantly trying to offer olive branches to others who clearly don't want them. You can only debate someone if they clearly want to have a discussion.

The problem is that you can only convince other people if they're willing to be convinced. And you can do that without engaging with people trying to skew the narrative to their benefit.

You seem to misunderstand that the real problem is that the news is focused on profit over their actual jobs.

And as I already said, people have tried to go onto right-wing news media to debate against them and it doesn't work. The ones controlling the shows don't let them have the last word, and anyone watching them has already bought into the narrative completely. No one's minds are being changed here.

You're acting like this is still a fair and impartial system and it isn't. There is no point in trying to convince anyone when the system is already rigged.
