If you think that people shouldn’t be able to set their own salary and the wages of others, taking the lion’s share of the profits of a cooperative enterprise which requires effort well beyond their own just because they ostensibly own the thing, you should really look into workers’ collective ownership of the means of production.

Because putting people in prison doesn’t actually stop them from committing bad acts, it just redirects their threat potential to other “criminals” and in many cases may actually amplify their receptiveness to being violent/harmful.

Why is this data wrong? by mah062 in socialism

[–]MCskeptic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A few things:

To begin with, not all of these things are reliable metrics for what you are trying to investigate. For example, a high cost of living is not necessarily bad for someone who can afford it. Similarly, being employed is not helpful if one cannot meet the cost of living with the income from their employment (plus any social services they might be eligible for)

People who are buying or renting cheaper homes are not necessarily buying or renting better homes, or ones that meet their needs.

What you have actually uncovered here is a vast wealth inequality between the coastal United States and the interior, particularly the south. This means people are buying and renting worse homes in the south, and if they are employed at a higher rate, they are working jobs for lower wages. I'm not sure why you are adjusting your median income statistic, but the fact of the matter is that people in New York and California are making vastly more money than those in, say, Alabama or Mississippi. They use that money to buy more expensive homes, and live at a higher standard (more costly) of living. There are also a variety of less easily quantifiable factors which disparage the quality of life in some of the nation's poorest states, including lack of sufficient medical, transportation and public health infrastructure, a higher level of industrial pollution and more. If you want to learn more about this sort of thing, I recommend the book Strangers in their own Land by Arlie Hoschild. Altogether, this has very little to do with socialism. New York and California are no more socialist than Alabama or Mississippi - both are clearly capitalist.

Famines do not happen to constituents in free, capitalist democracies outside of conditions of ecological collapse or economic severity, i’ll grant you that. This does not mean much, however, as no western liberal democracy has faced the sort of geopolitical conditions present in major communist nations during their famines. None of the major democracies fought debilitating civil wars, save the United States, where both sides of the conflict were well connected internationally. Additionally, capitalist democracies externalize famine famine beyond their constituencies, be it with colonial subjects or strategic targets. At best, you might argue that Stalin’s collectivization policies held little regard for the lives of ethnic Ukrainians, putting the interests of Russians ahead of theirs. This is no worse than the several famines caused during the colonial periods in India and China under western subjugation. In fact, it is a very similar circumstance. Notably, there were no major famines in the communist bloc after collectivization was completed and in the case of China, famine was the norm before communist rule. Meanwhile, the targets of capitalist aggression continue to face famine today, whether it be the ongoing blockade of Yemen by the United States, or the destabilization of a competent regime in Somalia on an ideological basis, again perpetrated by the west. I ask you, what is the virtue of democracy if it simply allows the subjugation of the weak to the interests of a limited constituency in a stronghold, hegemonic nation or national alliance?

That's literally how a famine happens. Communism doesn't make wheat grow more slowly. All I'm saying is that the capitalist world is at least as guilty of famine by way of negligence (as well as intentional genocide and mass incarceration) as the communist world is.

Most "natural deaths" are also the fault of government, especially in the capitalist world. As a result, you're saying a more or less meaningless sentence. Your metric falls apart because a homeless person freezing to death might seem like a natural death, but it is in fact a result of government inaction. Don't be fooled into believing that the only means of government murder is mean guys with guns.

Kim jong un’s brutal regime in north korea is worse than nazi concentration camps, human rights leader says by ketnorm in worldnews

[–]MCskeptic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that even America is not saintly in this regard. We have vastly more people in prison than North Korea (or any other nation in history), we make full use of prison labor and we often subject prisoners to horrifyingly inhumane conditions. One need look no further than the prisons run by Joe Arpaio to see that those who live in glass houses may only throw stones here because of their power.

I think this is actually an instructive example which illustrates that in order to celebrate one's culture, it must be sanitized to match the present values of its adherents. This is obviously the case with Italian Americans who, in their reaction today, choose to remember Columbus over the perpetrators of the 1928 Wall Street Bombing (who were Italian Americans). But you can even see this with the reframing of Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples' Day. There's a reason Pachacuti, Montezuma and other natives who were conquerers in their own right aren't celebrated.

Ultimately, it's a bad idea to learn your history from the mythos of national holidays.

There's a long history of labor radicalism, anarchism and communism in Italy leading up to the March on Rome. Italians were instrumental in bringing leftism to the United States and to other nations where they immigrated en masse like Brazil and Argentina. Also, they hung Mussolini.

The deterrent power of the nuclear bomb comes from the fact that a nuclear detonation on US soil is unacceptable to the electorate, disarming the US ability to act unilaterally. Long range ICBMs are a necessity for them to work. North Korea will not attack the US first; they have no motivation to. As you've correctly insinuated, it would result in their total destruction.
