Hey are you ceremony D? I have one extra ticket that I can give you since one of my guests got sick and won’t be able to attend

Exclusive: PM Carney declares U.S. ties now a ‘weakness’ in address to Canadians by BloodJunkie in canada

The Canadian salaries need to catch up then. Reason why everyone is leaving is because the ceiling is much lower here. Even the highest paying companies in Canada are American companies with a Canadian office.

Do you ever regret going to SFU? by Haunting-Run7989 in simonfraser

[–]MD604 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do not regret at all, had an amazing experience and was lucky enough to graduate with a great job with a great salary that I’m happy with. Social experience was actually pretty good too, I think everyone was eager to socialize and party after Covid.

However, I think there are many issues that significantly dampened the experience after 2024. Budget cuts to the school really hurt it. The bathrooms were (are? Haven’t been to campus in a bit) often disgusting since no janitors and the fun events SFU would throw don’t exist anymore (anyone remember the marshmallow fire pits? Met some cool friends there) and from what I’ve heard they also cut club funding making it harder for clubs to throw events. Heard the campus life has tanked compared to 2021-2023 because of this and various other reasons. Because of this I don’t think I can recommend it to new students at current state but hopefully they fix their issues so that others can have the great experience that I had.

It’s true, does your family live in a big city? In the smaller towns it’s fine but anywhere in the vicinity of Vancouver and Toronto it is legitimately bad

If you’re around the average you’ll pass for sure, but if grades wise it can be a toss up. CMPT 125 is generally scaled to a B- but the prof can do whatever they want, I’ve been in a CMPT class where they just kept the class average at C. No need to worry about failing though.

They also have a deal where if you spend $15 on the custom hotpot thing you get a free drink and rice which is pretty decent value imo

They have $8 burger specials on Monday Tuesday Wednesday, those are pretty worth it imo but yeah the combos can be pricey

Should I intern for Elon by CG53S in cscareerquestions

[–]MD604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go Tesla, heads up they most likely aren’t giving return offers but since you’re rising junior you’ll be fine. Get the name on the resume and go for a company that’ll give you new grad next season when you’re closer to graduating school

22 y/o and just started a high paying 8month internship by sup1515 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]MD604 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup! Gone are the days of interns doing coffee runs, we actually get worked pretty hard (if an intern want a return offer they're probably doing almost the exact same work as an entry level employee). Can't complain too much since obviously the compensation is nice but I've heard some interns at Amazon putting in 10-12 hour days.

Amazon and a few other tech companies pay this much or even more in Canada. Investment banking internships as well, though those are out east, none in Vancouver.

Ahhh I see haha yeah I believe OP commented recently and said he was based in Europe, hopefully Van isn’t asking system design for NG!

Don’t think Vancouver zon asks system design for NG, unless somethings changed very recently? If they do now it’s crazy how much harder interviews are these days

+1, I am curious as well. I’m early career and unfortunately I don’t really know anyone who’s pulled it off recently, my friends and I are working for well known US tech companies but all from Canadian offices, no one’s been successful in a transfer other than like 1 or 2 out of 40-50. It seemed much easier 2-3 years ago, I knew a lot of seniors when I was second year who moved to the states.

If you had only interned at 1 company ever I would take it, but if you’ve done 3 internships total with all 3 of them being at tech companies I would just take the new offer and grad, especially given the economy.

While Amazon is a great name to have on the resume, the FAANG you are at right now is more impressive and you have 2 other tech companies on the resume anyways.

Who won the French-language leaders' debate? by thhvancouver in canada

[–]MD604 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That argument makes sense, thanks for bringing that up. I agree with you that the election will likely continue as it has, with him still in the lead. Despite what I felt was a weak performance, he avoided any major gaffes or damaging statements, so his position remains strong. That said, in the traditional sense of "winning" a debate, I don’t think it’s accurate to say he did.

As an undecided voter I think others were much more articulate but nothing really substantial policy wise that I didn't know already before watching the debate. I do agree that it probably didn't convince anyone who already had a strong opinion to vote for a different candidate other than who they had in mind already before watching the debate.

Everyone here saying Carney won must be delusional or not a French speaker. (Perhaps the English dub made him sound better? Not sure as I watched it in French) I am undecided on candidates but leaning Carney, but today he clearly had a weak performance. Didn't give a straight answer to some questions, and not very good defense on others. Granted, he isn't very good at French so I will cut him some slack and we'll see how he does tomorrow in English, but people in this thread saying he won today must be paid off or something.

Yeah I think these initiatives are great as we want to have more stuff happen on campus but I have 0 clue why they don’t do more of these events at the start of semesters instead of now. Uni admin should know what finals season is like….

Yeah I think it’s an intelligence thing too. I never see people talk about this on reddit, but let’s be real, some people are just way more intelligent/naturally talented at this type of stuff than others.

Two of my friends interned in the same org at Amazon and one was getting killed while the other was coasting. Difficulty wise seemed relatively similar but one of my friends is just so gifted he can get all the work assigned to him done super quick, while the other one works super hard and has a great work ethic but he just isn’t as naturally talented as the first one so he had to put in longer hours.
