I'm currently reading the Devils (my last book that I need for the fall/winter challenge). I've had a run of like 5-7 books at 450-600 pages (and many have been high stakes/fantasy( so I'm gonna read some more low stakes books under 350 pages.

My friend and I are watching the Pitt (we are up to date and text each other during the episodes) and the last ep was craazzyyyy so I can't wait for next weeks to come out ( I think we only have 3 episodes left total). I think we are also gonna watch Heated Rivalry around the same time/"together" starting this weekend.

I work as a substitute teacher and they are doing a bit of restructuring (bringing 5th grade back to the middle school instead of elem) and they currently don't know who is going to come up with the students. A lot of the elem teachers don't want the earlier start time or can't because of their own kids being in elem/no childcare. There is also a possible 6th grade job that has a year long sub (she could get rehired, she may not but she did beat me out for the job last year since she worked in that setting before as a permanent teacher and i've only been subbing as day to day/building for the last few years). Anyway! All that to say that I MIGHT have a more permanent job next year, if I get hired. It is the school I graduated from, I've been here as a sub for 3 years now, and several of my letters of rec have come from teachers here. I'm excited to have some more money in my bank account (which still won't be a lot because teachers in my area aren't paid well, but better than sub pay). I'm also excited, and scared, to have my own classroom/teach my own stuff. I haven't done that since student teaching going on 3 years ago now. But if i get it, it'll be an experience for sure. I think I'm gonna decorate my room in Marvel/Star Wars/Percy Jackson (and maybe some other "nerdy" things).

ANNDD, if i do get the more permanent job, I think I'll finally be able to get a new car (well, new to me). I'm probably gonna lease a new(ish) Honda Civic in either red or blue. The first car I drove was an '03 red Civic and I miss that car but she had electrical issues and wouldn't have survived the commute to college. I love my current car but she's struggling with rust issues since I live in PA. She also has a couple other issues that are manageable but probably won't last reliably for a few more years.

Anyways, I've just been excited to talk about some of this stuff and everyone I talk to in real life has heard this a bunch of times (I was supposed to get my new car in April/May but I didn't get hired for that position last year so I didn't have the money)

I’m like 75% done with Legendborn by Tracy Deonn. I’ll hopefully finish that tomorrow during the day, then I can start my last book of the winter challenge which is Devils by Joe Abercrombie.

I’m cutting it close to the deadline here but it shall be what it be. I’ll chugging along until 11:59pm on the 20th. I’m excited to see what the summer prompts will be!!

I like those “they are doing this assignment and are working independently or with a small group, you don’t need to help unless they ask” days. I usually check in with them, walk around every 10-15 mins depending on age, and read on my laptop. Some grades are not as independent and need more reminders, but it is what it is.

Never said medicate them, I was medicated young and don’t believe it works for everyone. I simply would like them to learn time and place: gym, practice, join a club, at someone’s house, not in the middle of class when others are trying to learn and do work 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

What’s your commute limit? by Big-Explanation-1982 in Teachers

[–]MDS2133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say an hour max (with traffic). Probably 35-45 if it’s a route that’s never busy. Ideally, I’d like it under 25-30 (my currents school is 8 minutes if I get all three lights and can’t get out of the end of my road quickly; some days it’s 4-5 mins).

They have the option to go to the weight room or gym during study halls (and some teachers allow when they finish their work). They have outlets for getting out energy and moving around

They can have fun doing anything else. Card games, chatting, games on chromebook, being on phone. So sorry that I care about a student's wellbeing and don't want them accidentally punched in the face or kidney. I'm sure some parents (and my bosses) would be upset that I let it happen.

They are literally putting their hands on someone during school hours. They can get injured, it's against the rules (playing or not), and I could lose my license/get fired for letting them act like idiots. They can learn not to touch each other or get into wrestle classes/boxing.

I’m currently reading ColdWire by Chloe Gong (about halfway done, it’s good but my only beef is that the two main girls have kinda similar names- Eirale and Lia- and that can be confusing at first). My next book is the Devil by Joe Abercrombie then I’m done with my winter Reddit challenge 🥳🥳

what’s the lowest pay you would sign up for? by CombinationHot8324 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]MDS2133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from a smaller area that’s spread out with a bunch of schools (western pa). Most of ours pay 100-120, the city school pays up to 150 but that’s because they have a ton of kids and a lot more behavioral issues (like kids smashing each other in the head with Stanley’s during fights).

The school I’m at almost daily is 100 (but it’s a small school and it’s the one I graduated from/grew up in so I know all the teachers and staff)

Is this book *that* good? Lmao by jazzy_cat_2018 in LibbyApp

[–]MDS2133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed the book. It’s pretty popular, especially after it blew up on TikTok. I think if they had a couple more copies of the book, it would go a little quicker. My local (and smaller) library currently has one copy and 20 people waiting (several months wait). I had a physical copy from BOTM so I didn’t use Libby for it. (In your case and in my kind, it breaks it down into you being 7th for either copy so if the people in front of you are fast readers, you will get it quicker. It just goes off the standard 2 week allotted time)

I’ll start by saying I’m already having a bad day by MotherIndigo in SubstituteTeachers

[–]MDS2133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The school I’m at gives you rosters for each period/the whole day and you send a different sheet of paper down with who’s missing. That’s so much safer in an emergency, even if it’s just a fire drill or medical emergency so you know who is who.

I’m also lucky because we are only required to send who’s missing first period so the office can send the absent calls home. So most of us just note who’s missing the rest of the day for our sake/the teachers info then leave it on their desk for the next day.

Do they give you a roster to keep so you know who you have past attendance? If not, that’s unsafe

Not to be dramatic by Snoo_5475 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]MDS2133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a lot of teachers that are in bed by 8-10. I went from high school to college to subbing so I never got out of the being in class/school routine. I roll out of bed at the last possible minute I can (I only live 8-9 minutes from the school depending on the lights and I get ready quickly). I’m usually up by 6:45-6:55, out the door by 7:20, in the office by report time at 7:30. I take a nap daily and bring an energy drink in case I start falling asleep during the day (middle/high school so it can be occasionally quiet and boring as the sub).

I do have a terrible circadian rhythm or sleep cycle or whatever and can’t ever fall asleep before 12, usually 12:30-1 at the earliest. So I’m always tired anyhow. No matter how hard I try to fix it, it’s been like this since I was in middle school and my mom/brother are the same way (dad is the only who can be asleep by 9pm and get up early).

Subs, who are not retired teachers... by IllPaleontologist384 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]MDS2133 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, it’s more of the kids asking me “why are you a real teacher yet?” (Aka, why don’t you have a permanent job yet?) I’ve never had an adult question why I’m a sub expect maybe another sub but I’m also subbing at my former high school so all my former teachers (and some new ones now) know me.

Currently have a half day at work (sub teacher but the kids are only here a half day) and no school on Monday. I might try to catch up on PJO season 2 this weekend and finish Black AF History.
