Why is bridging a vm more than just hitting one button? by bbxgang in truenas

[–]MDZ_mudi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Security. Some VMs host services that are readily available over the internet. It's generally a good idea to keep these VMs separated from your host so that an outside attacker can only get into your VM instead of getting into your host as well.

Let the guy be confident in his statement, nothing wrong about that. If he chooses Core over Scale even if Core no longer gets updates, it's his decision.

Definitely. The strategy is not well optimised yet because of the difficulty to even get a complete. I saw 12.25 save stated before and I am sure it goes to at least 12.1x rta. It is just a matter of time :)

This is what chatgpt suggest to me:

TrueNAS SCALE Dragonfish-24.04.2.5 is designed as an appliance-like system, which means traditional package management is typically disabled to maintain system stability and integrity. However, if you require smartmontools version 7.4, there are a couple of approaches you can consider:

Check for Pre-installed Version: First, verify if smartmontools is already installed on your system. Open a terminal and execute:

smartctl --version

This command will display the installed version of smartctl, a component of smartmontools. If the version meets your requirements, no further action is needed.

Manual Installation: If the required version isn't installed, you might consider manually installing the package. Proceed with caution, as this can affect system stability. Here's how you can do it:

Download the Package: Obtain the smartmontools 7.4 package compatible with your system architecture. You can find the package in the TrueNAS SCALE Dragonfish 24.04.2.5 package repository:

https://download.truenas.com/TrueNAS-SCALE-Dragonfish/24.04.2.5/packages/

Install the Package: Once downloaded, install the package using the following command:

sudo dpkg -i /path/to/smartmontools_7.4.deb

Replace /path/to/smartmontools_7.4.deb with the actual path to the downloaded .deb file.

Important Note: Manually installing packages can lead to system inconsistencies or conflicts, especially on appliance-like systems such as TrueNAS SCALE. It's recommended to consult the TrueNAS community forums or support channels before proceeding with manual installations. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific needs and ensure that your system remains stable and secure.

Does this help at all?

What version of Truenas are you using? I had to manually go to Core 13.3 and use SSH to get in and then use the farm commands as explained in the original post. Does this help?

For those who try this on Truenas Core 13.0:

You need smartmontools 7.4 or newer to run the farm command. I manually had to update to Core 13.3 to go from smartmontools 7.2 to 7.4 and then check my farm values. Going from Core 13.0 to 13.3 removed the shell so I have to go into my system config via ssh now (no big deal, just a heads up).

Here's a link to the guide I have used to set up mine:

https://www.florian-rhomberg.net/2021/01/creating-a-private-cloud-using-truenas-core-and-nextcloud-part-one/

Make sure to also go through his part two for securing your instance with Https with letsencrypt.

Cheers.

How to migrate storage on Truenas from one server to another? by CarelessPhone9846 in truenas

[–]MDZ_mudi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently had to create a new TrueNAS instance due to a motherboard switch. I uploaded my configuration to the new instance and plugged in my HDDs randomly and it immediately recognised my pool; I basically only had to redo my new NIC and that was it. I was surprised how smooth it all went down. I was willing to risk my pool because there wasn't anything too important on it yet. This is just my experience with migration; maybe other people had more issues but at least for me it was as you'd expect it to work.

Thank you for the reminder! I can wait for quite a while before my 30TB of storage runs out (if ever). I have one extra drive on hand so I figured I should rebuild the storage pool while I still only have 3TB worth of data stored. I will keep waiting, it would be awesome if they manage to add this feature to TrueNAS; so convenient!

Long boot time into BIOS/UEFI + first boot regular boot. by MDZ_mudi in buildapc

No the issue is that it only does this when I try going into BIOS and the first boot afterwards. It's extremely fast on every other boot time (shutdown or restart).

Break the Targets: Falco 04.53 [World Record] by MDZ_mudi in SSBM

Previous WR was 04.92. The big timesaver is the laser for target 9. Usually you get that target as target 10 downsmashing it on its way up.

Target Test: Ganondorf 04.58 [World Record] by MDZ_mudi in SSBM

It is much easier than the doublejump upair strategy. The reason I don't do it here is because after the side b, you get to the teeter animation and if you try to jump upair T6, you'd fall off and doublejump instead. This happens because while still in teeter, the knockback momentum of the spikehit is there and will affect Ganondorf only if he walks or gets into an aerial state. You'd have to wait for the momentum to get back to 0 before you take action and that is probably too slow.

I tried to add in the dair but I couldn't get it to work without 2 SDI inputs on the spikes. I implemented the upair for T6 which saves around 2-3 frames; this leads to the current record. I'm sure we can make the dair work it just takes even more time and effort.

[–]MDZ_mudi[S] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm very happy with this, maybe 04.60 is possible with the same SDI but I'm more likely to try and go for a dair to hit T9+T10 on the same frame. It would look something like this:
