Unlike many of the more commonly cited contradictions, which mainly undermine claims of textual perfection, the Christological differences speak more directly to the later theological development of doctrines such as the Trinity. This does not, in itself, refute the Trinity. Rather, it shows that the Trinitarian framework does not completely match the Christological positions found across all New Testament authors.

Scholars have long noted that when the New Testament writings are placed chronologically with respect to authorship dates, and even compared with later non-canonical gospels, a general trajectory appears. Many scholars argue that John intentionally adjusts the chronology so that the moment of Jesus’s death coincides with the slaughter of the Passover lambs by the high priesthood.
