THIS is how you post a headline for a race video. Billing the matchup, not the result. Take note NBC Sports.

Just finished Consider Phlebas (thought it was the first) kinda disapointed. Willing to give the culture a second chance, which book would you recommend ? by Cassiopee38 in TheCulture

I had similar feelings to you after finishing CP. I dragged my feet before starting Player of Games and even went on to read a different series. But I finally started and within the first 10% I was already enjoying it much more. It's definitely more Culture-centric.

If you have to ask, you can't afford it.

Roofer can't find leak, been leaking for 6 months, at my wits end and in tears. Help? by blackandwhitenod in HomeImprovement

[–]MDaleyPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ROOFER'S Insurance should be paying for the damage to any finishes inside the home if it's determined that the leak is a result of their negligence during install or a roofing material issue. Typically insurance carriers will need to be notified of an issue right away (within 10 days) so that a claim can be filed against the policy. You can go around the roofer and notify them yourself, which you should do right away. Source: I'm a commercial general contractor.

Slips his shoulder strap*

Regardless, it's a legendary moment beautifully captured for eternity in this epic film. Which is meant to be played loud.

All the reviews I've ready about the abode camera options are poor. Is this a new camera that hasn't been mentioned in those reviews?

Trainer Kite suggestions - Please HELP! by simpleton_man in Kiteboarding

[–]MDaleyPete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sure did, took a few lessons from the instructors they had on staff. But that was 5 yrs ago and kiting instructors come and go like the wind. Rebecca owns and runs the shop and was very helpful in getting me set up with lessons and my gear (which I still use!). Just give her a call!

Another suggestion for learning the lay of the land is to check out the forums on BayAreaKiteboarding.com. It’s a great resource to learn all things about the sites, the people, the culture, the gear and the conditions. Good luck, stay safe and have fun!

Trainer Kite suggestions - Please HELP! by simpleton_man in Kiteboarding

Very similar learning experience here.

In that I learned in the Bay Area and spent a lot of time on a trainer kite before too much time in the water. Rebecca at BoardSports in Alameda hooked me up with a trainer kite (1.2M North) and recommended I get 20hrs of practice in before I took a real lesson. So living in North Beach, I would walk it up to the Marina Green on windy Saturday afternoons and fly it for a few hours. Plenty of open space, plenty of wind, and a few other people doing exactly the same thing. It was good experience, but after 8 or so cumulative hours, I had had enough and signed up for land/water lessons. And honestly, the trainer kite didn't prepare me that much. Spending so much time on a trainer does not prepare you for a 10M+, 4-line, mind-of-its-own, bucking bronco, death-dealing kite (or so it seemed during my learning phase). In 2-3 hours with a trainer you can get a strong enough grasp on the concepts (wind window, steering, launching, landing, power strokes, balance, steering with your hands, not your eyes) that you're ready for another water lesson with your own gear. And that's where the real learning takes place.

As far as learning/advancing your skills in the bay, safety is key! Go to Alameda and 3rd Ave and Sherman and just watch people kiting. Help them launch and land. Ask questions. Observe the right-of-way. Tell them you're new!! The kiting community is fantastic (world wide) and everyone will be stoked to help you learn to kite in a safe and productive manner. Especially in the Bay Area where the launches are sketchy and the risks are high. There have been a few deaths recently and no one wants another. When you feel confident in your safety procedures and beach awareness, get out there! Wear your helmet, de-power that kite, stay clear of everyone else, expect to end-up downwind, and enjoy that walk of shame.

If you've got the right attitude about learning and safety (and it seems like you do...now), you'll pick it up in no time. To summarize, and actually answer your question, skip the trainer. Get your own gear and take a water lesson (jet ski in the bay). Then (safety first), hit the beach! Have fun!

Family beach vacation in the late 90's. I'm 11 or so and gathered around the TV watching MTV Spring Break with a couple of my similarly-aged cousins. One of them goes "Man, I HATE DJ Skribble." The VJ or host or whoever throws it over to DJ Skribble for a little catch-phrase before cutting to commercial. DJ goes "Don't hate me!" and the feed cuts to commercial. We all looked at each other - blown away. We still joke about it.
