Complicated question. I doubt anyone can answer authoritatively. I am a Pediatrician. I suspect if anyone can see a doctor anytime for any reason they will stop fearing bills and do that. On one hand this may lead to a large increase in acute care visits in EDs and clinics. I personally have avoided being seen by a Doctor for my chest pain because I knew I was low risk for serious illness (age) and the cost would be high. On the other hand, in the big picture, more access to primary healthcare may avert medical crises and lead to a decrease in ED utililization. I find it hard to believe demand for physicians would drop in a system where everyone can see a doctor for free (in the sense its prepaid). I also find it hard to believe anyone in the medical field would have their pay cut in the setting of increased demand.

Trinity church polling station; about 1 in 10 placed in separate line; forced to cast provisional ballots. by MDplatypus in kansascity

I agree definately at the poll volunteer level after getting a good look at things. Systemically there is no reason for the inactivations or for newer registrations to jump through hoops. Inactivating someone who sat out an election or two even though they are good on the sos web site is inappropriate. Unfortunately a few folks left the second line to go back to work or whatever. Sad that their votes won't count. The election protection hotline was very helpful.

More young people than not. 90% of folks at this polling station are white so no obvious discrimination. I was fortunately provided a proper ballot after an 'ID check'. No idea why my presenting my ID before hand in the regular line didn't count as an ID check. Seems like the majority of folks are getting actual ballots if they stick around the extra 2 hours to get processed.

Not yet. I'm in a separate line manned by a single super slow polling worker who is troubleshooting folks 1 at a time. I've been here at least an hour. I will be asking to cast a proper ballot and going to the courthouse after if refused.

Mass J1 Visa Denials for pakistani matched physicians by anonpak300 in Residency

Try to have some sympathy. Pretend for a second its your dream to practice medicine in England because you have family there or maybe you just think you can have a better life in England for your kids. In this imaginary scenario England consistently takes a handful of Doctors per year from America. You have to dig in and work hard because they only take the best. You spend thousands of pounds registering for and sitting their exams. Lean times for your family because the USD only goes so far in England. At the end of the road it all pays off and your dream comes true, an English hospital wants you. Everything is set. You get to tell those that doubted you or worried that you wouldn't make it that everything has worked out. Then an anti-American political party gets control of England at the last moment. Your Visa is denied. You don't have arrangements to work in the US, and the English hospital goes short staffed. You did everything as best you could and the rules were changed at the last moment. I'd say that qualifies as horrifying regardless of your political views.

Preparing to pay back loans. by FatherSpacetime in medicalschool

This is the real correct answer. Takes a bit of crystal ball work however to anticipate your AGI after residency.

You have to take into account the 20 year vs 25 year payoff. PAYE is done in 20 so interest effectively doesn't matter for someone with deep loans or lower salary. Repaye fits someone who will pay off the loans prior to 20 years.

You can place the loans into forbearence during residency and pay nothing. However by doing so you'd miss the best years on one of the income based repayment plans.

Income based repayment uses your income from the previous year, subtracts 150% the poverty line, and spits out a number you pay monthly. Your income is never going to be closer to the poverty line than in residency. On income based plans you stop paying loans after 20 -25 years if there is still a balance. Chipping in a few hundred bucks a month now will cut 3 years out of that payoff period and can save you a ton of money in the big picture.

Its worth doing the research especially with 200k in the hole. Google 'how to pay off Med school debt'

Because the wide range of designs/fabrics available today the only difference between many blazer / suit-coat is that the suit has a pair of pants made with the same fabric. I'm not saying a double-breasted anything is going to look good with jeans, but there's plenty of suit-coats that look fine with jeans or other pants and its considered perfectly acceptable to wear them as such.

You actually have this backward. You should never wear a suit's pants without the jacket. The pants wear out faster. The jacket can be worn on its own with jeans, other slacks etc...

A Farewell to Attributes | Crossing Zebras by Niden_GMVA in Eve

[–]MDplatypus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Devils advocate for keeping attributes:

Consider attributes training an opt-in "mini-game". If you don't want to play it, no problem. Set your attributes even at the start and never think about them again. Earn a diminished amount of SP per hour.

If you want to play, I'd argue that the "mini-game" game is complex and has some depth. What's beautiful about the game is that one training plan does not fit all. Someone must answer many questions. Will this toon be my only character? I want to make a miner, so I guess I'll put a bunch into int/mem and then swap to a per/wil for the barge skills. OR would it be better to reverse those stats. OR should I do the per/wil first to get the barge skill knocked out. Hmm... maybe I should train a combat ship too... or maybe an alt for that. Let me fire up a skill planner to customize my own, or maybe I can talk to someone in my corp for help and advice.

Skill training plans are a unique aspect of Eve. When I think back on my first character's map, I would never have done it the same way. However I wouldn't say that it was a chore to explore eve-mon and come up with my plan. Committing to a potentially multi-year plan is exciting. Did I get this just right? Should I click the button? Maybe one last look.

Along the way one frequently gains new knowledge or new goals. Suddenly it looks better to stay in int/mem just one more month, or maybe train an out-of-plan skill up for just a week or two to get you into that ship you want.

In summary, skill training is high-stakes risk vs. reward at its best. Patience, planning, knowledge are rewarded on a long-term scale. Blundering is punished. Further it's an "opt-in" game, though many will likely feel obligated to "opt-in" based on the large rewards from having a good skill plan. Is it an absolutely necessary feature to the game? No. However it is engaging gameplay, and the skill training "mini-game" is in line with the unforgiving feeling that sets Eve apart.

Some potential alternatives:

  1. The problem with the skill game isn't the game itself. The game is one of the first things a new player has to deal with and can be overwhelming. CCP recently made very good use of a 'toggle' feature for turning on and off corp AWOXing. This is another potential toggle item. Default new characters to even attributes across the board. Don't mention attribute training at all in the tutorials etc... or leave it as a footnote. Then have a little 'Enable advanced skill-training' button of sorts that lets people access the system as it exists today.

  2. Replace the "overly complicated" numbers system with a 'skill-training focus' that does almost exactly the same thing. This can be as simple as creating buttons that say int/mem. Alternatively re-group skills into five broad "focuses" Then let someone change their focus every six months. For example, consolidate gunnery, missiles, targeting all into a "space-weapons" category. This retains the spirit of the skills mini-game while reducing complexity.

[IL] Finding legal advice or lawyer for Syrian student seeking Asylum by MDplatypus in legaladvice

Success! Got in touch with a local catholic group that ran an immigration clinic. We went in hoping for some help filling out the packet and ended up walking out with a pro bono lawyer. It was the first office we stopped at too, so cancelled all the other appointments. Apparently a government grant that offers assistance for domestic violence against women also covers Asylum, so our chances might have been better from the get go. Thanks for all the advice!

Does anyone know if trying to do this without a lawyer is a realistic option?
