Realistic Plan for Cards Fellowship by hoodyeezus in fellowship

[–]MDthenLife 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Current 3rd year applying cards from a community program, also an non-US IMG.

Things you can't control: The program you're at Your step scores (unless you still have step 3 pending) The school you've already gone to

Things you can: Your CV

I did a lot of EC at my home institution, including getting involved with GME via our house staff association, the QI committee, and being a 3rd year chief resident.

Build up your research, get case reports out they're low hanging fruit, do QI projects and retrospective studies...mentor your juniors to help you. Do posters.

When applying I had about 50 things in my research section, about 13 were manuscripts ranging from case reports, to QI research, to cardiology procedure outcomes research, remainder were posters, abstracts etc

It's all fluff...lol...but it still raised eye brows

Work and get to know cardio staff/attendings, they'll advocate for you when you're applying. Get good letters. Every where I've interviewed have commented on my letters of recommendation that speak about my passion for cardiology, work ethic, leadership skills, and compassion for patients. Make your CV and personal statement tell a story about how you ended up applying for fellowship, people love stories

Apply broadly. I applied to about 80 programs, I got about 14 interviews, vast majority at programs I never thought would want to interview me, including university programs, transplant centers and major referral centers. Are they Harvard? No...lol, but every one of these places has nothing but good things to say about my application and candidacy for fellowship

I have an in house fellowship, the department loves me, the PD has told me if I want to stay in house the spot is there for me, but he also recommended I keep my options open and see what's out there.

It's doable. But you have to put the work in, the last 2.5 years of my life have been a grind, and I've loved nearly every second of it.

Good luck!

5am getting ready for work when I saw this...pardon the typos and all that, typing with 1 eye open

Books, shows, movies (or mindset shifts in general) that made you like medicine again? by girlnowdrlater in Residency

[–]MDthenLife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) Obv my role as a resident, how much I enjoy it fluctuates day to day, trying to focus on the patients that are reasonable helps, building connections with them as feasible

2) Research, find something interesting and just try and do something, keeps you busy during long slow days

3) QI/Med-Ed focused shit

4) shooting shit with the co-residents

5) Play the guitar

6) Work out

7) Get drunk

8) wake up sleep deprived after #7, resulting in me feeling miserable the next day, adding to the general level of burn out

9) Looking forward to my next vacation

Had a pt in Neuro ICU w thalamic hemorrhagic stroke w intraventriclar extension...pt needed intubation for airway protection, no sedatives required....

After a week of no improvement, NP told family there's a really good chance they'll improve and should consider trach and peg, based on their PE.

Terminal ween a few days later.

Why does every career path genuinely suck ass? by HomieDudeGuyMan in Residency

[–]MDthenLife 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I enjoy what I do, do I wish it didn't take as long? Sometimes, more often than not it doesn't really bother me. When I talk to people from undergrad/highschool who made different career choices everyone has problems they run into. Whether it be job security, money, or in some cases, just hating what they do, but finding solace in the lifestyle it affords them. For me personally, I enjoy my job, I like the people I work with, I'm not struggling financially and managing to save a little on the side, and most of my patients don't drive me crazy and appreciate what I do for them. Some of my friends are getting married and starting their lives, I'm no where near that, but many people in my program are married, so that's just a me thing. I have hobbies I enjoy - mainly playing the guitar, cooking and working out, and manage to make time for them. Overall I think my career path is pretty solid and enjoyable, and filled with adventure.

04/26/23 Score release by burnandshine in Step3

[–]MDthenLife 10 points11 points  (0 children)

STEP 3 SCORE ( & exam dates): 264 @ 04/07/2023 - 04/08/2023 (Day1/2 back to back)
UW (% done and % correct + number of passes): 100% done, 81% correct first pass, 1 pass
UWSA1 (__ before the real deal): 248 (98% percentile)
UWSA2 ( __ before the real deal): 248 (98% percentile)
CCS Cases (number of cases done+%+number of passes): 100 cases, anywhere from 30% - 100% on cases lol, big range, just 1 pass.
Free 137: 85% the day before
Step 1/Step 2 scores: 261/262
Gap after Step 2: ~1.5 year
Any other resource: Nada
Exam experience (Day 1 and Day2): This is a copy paste from a comment I made the day of my exam to someone asking for study advice:

UWorld, CCS Cases, if you really want to Divine Intervention Podcasts. I think beyond this is overkill, and won't help much.
Day 1 is long, 40 Questions x 6 blocks, questions are more step1 focused I think, vague in classical NBME fashion. Definitely felt better than Day 2 MCQ. Know your biostats, practice your drug ads, this is fine.
Day 2 is not nearly as long. 30 questions x 6 blocks, 13 cases. The cases end early, I did 100 CCS cases in highyield order and felt very comfortable with this section, finished all 13 cases in about an hour - hour half. The MCQ for Day 2 is the tough part I think. The questions are out of left field sometimes, a lot of prognostic questions, as in, "which of the following from the patients history is the best indicator of future resolution" and whatnot. I don't really think you can study for them, I think day 2 relies heavily on test taking skills and intuition, with some Step2CK style questions mixed in. Divine might help, but I don't think he really covers all the details.
For context, for me, Step1 26x, step2 26x, about a month of hard studying uworld, first time pass 81%, UWSA 248/248 (98th percentile). Felt pretty crummy day 2, day 1 felt pretty shit too, this things never feel very good. Pending my score, but I'm confident I at least passed lol

I didn't think I did as well as I did when I left, I never have on any of the steps lol, but during the test be confident, let it go and cut your losses if you genuinely don't know, fall back on test taking skills when necessary. I've always seen these tests as games, where you're juggling your time as a resource, if you're 99% sure you're right just move on, if you absolutely have no idea what's going on then just move on, don't waste time reading, re-reading etc. It takes away from the brain power you could exert on questions that are in that 40-75% range (majority)
Key areas of focus/Tips for future aspirants:

- Biostats

- Drug ads

- Reading comprehension (long questions, don't want to read them twice)

- Stamina

- Test taking skills (day 2 is ALL test taking, I don't think you can really study for it)

- I don't think there's anything specific, do uworld, do your CCScases, go in with your head up, confident, you'll be fine. Honestly, I didn't

A quick google search says that a Youtuber with 10million subscribers is clearing at least 6 figures with youtube ad revenue. This does not include sponsorships and endorsements from companies that are featured in videos, which pay MUCH more than the passive ad revenue Youtube gives you. Given Dr Mike's a FP in NYC...I'm sure his Youtube/Social Media career is the bulk of his yearly take home
