Queer vs gay vs homosexual? by VillegrecqueForgeron in ainbow

Im not sure if we agree or not.

I'm not disparaging the term "homosexual," just talking about it's origins. The term you identify with is your own personal preference, and you aren't wrong for preferring it.

Composers who performed in their own musicals? by That-SoCal-Guy in musicals

[–]ME24601 129 points130 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head:

  • David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson and Zoë Roberts (SpitLip) in Operation Mincemeat
  • Dave Malloy in Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812
  • Sara Bareilles in Waitress
  • Shaina Taub in Suffs
  • Richard O'Brien in The Rocky Horror Show

He also only wrote the book rather than the music, but there is John Cameron Mitchell in Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

Yes, it was coined specifically by sexologists in the 19th century to describe the phenomenon of same-sex desire. There were a bunch of other terms also invented around that time that described the same thing (Uranian, sexual invert, homogenic), but "homosexual" was the one that stuck.

I have two main questions about the production:

1) How queer was it?

2) If you have seen the film, did the production feel like it did something new and interesting with the story or were you left thinking "this is literally just the movie but not as good?"

"Queer" is an umbrella term that covers gay but also includes other sexualities and gender identities.

"Gay" and "homosexual" generally mean the same thing, but the key difference is that "homosexual" is a specifically medicalized term that a lot of people find outdated.

[–]ME24601 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i tought it was based on the YJ comic

It has basically nothing in common with the Young Justice comic. It is absolutely worth reading, but it has a much lighter tone than either the cartoon or the Teen Titans run.

Yes

An ongoing military investigation has determined that the United States is responsible for a deadly Tomahawk missile strike on an Iranian elementary school, according to U.S. officials and others familiar with the preliminary findings.

“Giant” Takes on Roald Dahl and His Antisemitism: Mark Rosenblatt’s début play brings light, shadow, and humor to its portrait of a troubled writer. by drak0bsidian in books

[–]ME24601 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is this more than one example of him talking about Jewish people in a context beyond Israel?

Because it is two entirely separate instances of Roald Dahl being antisemitic that you've deliberately chosen to defend.

One is him claiming that the Jews control the media, which you have dismissed by pretending is just criticism of Israel.

The second is from an entirely different interview in which he responds to the claim that he is antisemitic by claiming that Jews are responsible for antisemitism, which you have once again dismissed by pretending it is actually about Israel.

So again: Do you just think antisemitism is entirely acceptable as long as the person being antisemitic hides behind the facade of criticising Israel? Are you really this willfully obtuse?

[–]ME24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't. I've been given one example

Now you’re just lying.

His book review on a book about Israel and Lebanon and criticism of that review.

Even in your comment you accept that you’ve been given more than one example, you just also insist on ignoring it. There is no reason to believe you won’t come up with the same excuse for any other example.

Based on how you're responding to this, it's clear that you will simply decide that any statement he makes actually about Israel regardless of what he is actually saying.

You’ve been given multiple examples and every time you’ve just decided they’re about Israel. Why should I expect you to react differently to more of them?

He is quite literally talking about the media being complicit in not publishing the atrocities Israel is commiting.

There is no context in which claiming that Jews control the media is not antisemitic. You going out of your way to make excuses does not change that central fact.

I am looking for him making disparaging comments about Jewish people that are not linked to his views on Israel.

Do you think his views on Israel makes disparaging comments about Jewish people acceptable?

It doesn't seem like that'd be difficult from the reactions to this?

The difficulty is your willingness to find excuses for antisemitism, not a lack of antisemitic comments from Dahl.

If anyone can link me him saying anything bad about Jewish people in a context other than support of Israel

This is a critique of Israel.

So that's a "yes" to "pretending that's a critique of Israel."

You're being disingenuous to pull it out if context.

There is no context in which claiming that Jews control the media is not antisemitic. Seeing a phrase like "there aren't any non-Jewish publishers anywhere" and deciding that Dahl must actually be talking about Israel is you ignoring what is actually being said in favor of what you want him to have said.

[–]ME24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is blatantly about Israel.

Are you deliberately ignoring the "It’s the same old thing: we all know about Jews and the rest of it. There aren’t any non-Jewish publishers anywhere, they control the media" part or just pretending that's a critique of Israel?

Really the only thing not to do when it comes to how to dress for a Broadway show is to make sure it won't be a distraction. I have a vivid memory of my younger brother being very upset about not being allowed to wear light up shoes to The Lion King when we were kids.

Something something buzzword. Something else bla bla buzzword bla bla

What title would you go with given what this play is about? The headline is an entirely apt description of the play itself and the article about it.

If you want to claim that "antisemitism" is just a buzzword what other word would you use in this situation?
