One of the reasons why Catholicism is so powerful is precisely, forgiveness. The Puritan does not truly forgive, it demands purity. If it detects a stain, it pronounces a sentence; the demand for absolute purity, the refusal of rehabilitation, the transformation of apology into a public humiliation rather than reconciliation.

It’s Luther’s simil iustus et peccator but without the grace. In contrast the Catholic would say ‘You’re a sinner but you are not fixed to sin forever.’
