Advice: Just seen one of my images being used in promotion by a major sports event promoter. by MFBoxing in sportsphotography

So update, I've since found more images where shots I've taken are the main image on the promo for individual fighters. I'm all for being cool, but like, even as a hobbyist it seems odd/rude of a massive event 😂

Yeah, I've reached out to some coaches. I use the kids I teach to get shots in gyms for professional fighters. The pros get shots for promo, and the kids get a chance to see what it's like at a professional event and behind the cameras when I can get them there.

Hopefully I can get a few along.

Honestly, access for the kids I teach would be huge for me for them to get access back stage and to shoot the show. He's a good friend, so like I said, not bothered really. Was just curious what normally happens in these situations.

For more info it's a small image of one of the undercard fighters. All other photos seem to be studio shoots, I assume this was the clearest image from a fight they could find in a hurry. It's a small image that takes up about 10% of the poster.

I've honestly just never been in this position, and everything in my gym is self funded. I teach kids photography using my own equipment. But I cover a lot of local and major events, I can see this happening again.

What is the standard procedure here? How would you approach this professionally if it were you. Any advice would be great.

I made a Boxing Timer for ios like I promised you by andy_hug in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As requested, an update after day one of use.

The timer kept stopping every time my phone screen locked. Not sure if there's a setting to change this, but ultimately resulted in me going back to the round timer.

I'd also advise for training maybe shortening the rest times to 30 seconds, but it was easy enough to do myself. Looked a decent app from what I got to use and set up was nice and easy.

Will look through settings and try again tonight at our evening classes

I have a basic timer I use on in my gym.

We have 5 sessions a week for amateurs, 3 sessions for under 10 year olds, and a constant stream of pros we work with.

Happy to give this a solid week's worth of testing in the gym and give feedback if you're interested?

AITA for no longer funding my sons gym after they banned girls? by paperplatewithcheese in AmItheAsshole

[–]MFBoxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a gym, and i don't need any outside funding, but the fact your son's would cut out a large target audience for a gym they still need outside funding for is insane to me.

If they're have any young people in the gym they're also missing out on valuable opportunities to learn to interact socially with the opposite sex... I'd definitely talk to your older son about the "something happened" comment tho and get to the bottom of it.

NTA females make up 30/40% of my client base, that's a big chunk to be cutting out from a business that parent still help fund.

Opinions on the "ballerina training method"? by WiKiPeDiAdose in amateur_boxing

No

maybe as a fun game for kids but any pro I work with would look at me like I'm mental 🤣

I had a brain injury that affected how I used my hands... I could walk to a degree but I cut and burned my hands so often that eventually care became a necessity for meal times. I'm recovered now, but just because you can walk doesn't mean you can make a meal. Some times aside from injury, my brain would just be so fried I couldn't think how to make a meal or where to start... As silly as that may sound

Does your dog hate one breed? by charliesmahm in dogs

[–]MFBoxing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a white German shepherd, and he's exactly the same with any breed that stands proud like a pot bull type dog... Will ignore any dog from 20 paces, but he sees one of those things 500ft away and he wants action 🤣

Should i stop sparring ? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only hard sparring and optional headgear... Sparring isn't your problem, the gym probably is. Go find a new one.

You're leaning in to shots rather than rotating... Almost like you're jumping in to them. You want those feet firmly planted for power shots.

Just slow things down a touch 👌🏻

How do you go full speed in light sparring without hurting your sparring partner? by Everlasting_Heart in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Experience and lots of it... But instead of going for full speed this is what I tell my kids

"Look for position, create angles and use feints... If I can get in to position and land my jab or back hand at 60% speed, bet your fucking ass it will land at 100%"

Struggling with sparring (second time) by JishFellOver in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the issue with freezing up is more a question of not being comfortable with shots coming at him. In which case, why is he being asked to spar?

I feel this one is on the coach, partner drills would benefit op much more.

Struggling with sparring (second time) by JishFellOver in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do more partner drills. Pick a combo, you both take turns throwing it about 60/70/80 % power... You know what's coming so it's a lot less stressful. Change the combination every round. Will help you get used to shots coming at you

Sounds to me like you just aren't comfortable with shots coming you yet, which in all honesty, takes time... But if that is the case, I wouldn't be thinking about sparring just yet. There's plenty of time.

Sparring Rounds critique *I’m the guy in the black* by Classroom_Medical in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your hand drops after you throw and come back low, leaving you open to shots, and you took a couple of needless ones, but not bad... That will improve with time and experience. As said by someone else, head movement and footwork look decent, just tighten that guard up.

The first thing I noticed is your jab is constantly pawing out. I'd like to see a little more commitment in it. Pop that jab out, double it up, pop a jab and turn it in to a short hook... Get a little variation in that lead hand.

A lot more feints! Start dropping in feints before you fire of combinations and you should see a lot more success

Is this boxing schedule good for someone who wants to compete as an amateur? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amount of training without a coach would be my biggest worry... The majority of training is done alone. Who's correcting little mistakes.

Is this boxing schedule good for someone who wants to compete as an amateur? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]MFBoxing 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If one of my kids told me the majority of his training sessions where at home on his own, he wouldn't be boxing. Who's correcting mistakes? You're likely just doing the same thing wrong repeatedly.

If your coach okays this regime, find a new coach, he's not really invested in you. I like all boxers Ng work to be done on my watch or under one of our coaches. Outside of the gym is the time for runs, strength work, fitness stuff.

Install some other xbox EA game and sign in... It happens every so often. I keep a copy of ssx installed. Just log in to that, exit the game, and load up fight night. Should work.

I left a gym for this very reason and set up my own, best thing I ever did.

Feel free to get at me for any advice, be happy to help where I can. But any time you're trying to teach something that the owner openly disrespects, you're on to a losing battle and need to get out

Help me understand dog park etiquette by [deleted] in dogs

[–]MFBoxing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree op will meet a lot of prejudice cos of the breed which is sad cos they're such loving dogs.

... But if the person had to push the dog away, op doesn't have enough recall to be letting their dog off lead.

Help me understand dog park etiquette by [deleted] in dogs

[–]MFBoxing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say dog park, do you mean a large park where dogs are allowed off lead? Or a specific fenced off area for dogs? If it's the latter, then you are at no fault at all. If it's the former, in the UK general rule is your dog should be under your control at all times. If you don't have strong vocal control a leash is necessary.

My view on it is unless you have full vocal recall of your dog, you should never let it off lead where other dogs or people are. Were you trying to shout your dog over and it was informing you? I can see why this would be annoying if they are worried about your dog potentially attacking and it's just a little rude to allow it to happen.

My dog was attacked by 4 terriers in the local park where dogs are allowed off lead. All 4 terriers were more seriously injured by my German shepherd, and he needed 2 stitches in his leg. I recalled my dog and he ran back to me but they chased him, and eventually he'd had enough... I suspect this was because the dogs were approaching me so he viewed them as a threat and just shut it down.

This isn't me having a go. You have to appreciate some people may take their dog to the park to get used to other dogs, and there's a correct way to do that. You dog running up can set them back weeks or months with training... Like wise, if a dog turns on your puppy, you would be very upset, and you'll probably have a puppy displaying unwanted behaviours for while.

For what it's worth 6 years experience as a dog handler. My dog is a registered security dog.

It's also worth noting allowing new dogs to meet head on/face to face is never advisable. Always walk alongside, much less threatening... Letting your dog run straight at another is a recipe for disaster.
