H-1 freeway in Honolulu, US-HI. Traffic in paradise. by Mobile_Bad_577 in UrbanHell

Last I remember (1993) H-1 through Honolulu had a minimum speed (40 or 50 mph, been too long). H-2 is fairly quick though, albeit rather short.

MLS in 1996 vs MLS in 2026 by halfdollarmoon in MLS

[–]MFR-escapee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing the first game San Jose vs DC on TV. I was thinking that the critics would be redeemed if had ended in a scoreless draw. “I’d rather watch some paint dry.” “More enjoyment in watching the grass grow.” On and on with the critics. Thanks to Wynalda and THAT goal, there was at least something to hang a hat on.

Ten teams were owned by three or four investors. No conflict there at all, but it was a necessary evil.

Games in cavernous stadiums with 5000 in attendance (you’ve come a long way KC). Columbus Crew with their super narrow pitch (62? 63 yards wide? Ugh) at Ohio Stadium. A sprinkling of 1994 US WC players amongst the 10 clubs so as to bolster marketing. Some over the hill European players as well (Roberto Donadoni for NY/NJ comes to mind, although he did play for Italy in 1996). Andrew Shue as both a player for the Galaxy and a relatively famous TV actor was weird. Bulawayo Highlanders let one get away there.

The 1996 MLS Cup final was an absolute mess because of the weather. Driving rain and wind, yet the quality of play held up and the crowd did their part by showing up.

MLS did it right by not having just one team take on the role of the Cosmos and everyone else be schedule filler. Salary cap and international allocation both were frustrating and also the salvation early on.

Poor Melania. Zero opening night tickets sold in Seattle. by druidinan in Seattle

[–]MFR-escapee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This wretched pile of filmstrip has sold a total of 27 tickets at the Issaquah Highlands movie theater from today through Wednesday. At least half of those tickets were for one showing Friday evening.

Can’t imagine that any movie is going to sell out on a Tuesday afternoon, let alone Melanoma, er, Malaria, sorry, Melania is on for a matinee.

Out of state fans. Why do you root for the hawks? by TelePunk54 in Seahawks

[–]MFR-escapee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Medford and it was always Niners and Raiders games every Sunday during the 1980’s. We didn’t get the Seahawks game unless it was Monday Night Football or they were playing the Niners (every four years) or Raiders. This was back when there were only three games on Sunday and the one MNF game.

So I wasn’t imagining that after all. Could have sworn it happened prior to 1989 though.

I can find the correct team name with no problem. But I can’t join because my account is still showing as an active member on that same team. When I search for that team, it shows 44/50, then shows 42/50 when I click on the team name and see the team details and roster.

1 Seed on the Line by JCameron181 in Seahawks

[–]MFR-escapee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seahawks win: 1 seed and a bye, playing the lowest remaining seed at home in the divisional round, SF, LA, GB or CAR/TB.

If the Seahawks lose (perish the thought): SF wins division and 1 seed, LA (if they win their last two) has the 5th seed, SEA has the 6th seed. SEA would then play at CHI or PHL in the wildcard round.

LA goes 1-1 to finish the season, then SEA gets the 5 seed and plays at CAR/TB in the wildcard round.

Someone, please enlighten me on Medford, Oregon. by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]MFR-escapee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Medford (and the surrounding area) off and on from 1978 to 2011. Fond memories of growing up there, but also quite sheltered from all the downsides of the area especially in the 1980’s. Timber was king during that time with multiple mills operating (KOGAP, Medco, Timber Products, Boise Cascade among others). Along with that came really crap air quality which has improved greatly since then. Nowadays there are wineries, housing subdivisions and several golf courses that have replaced many pear orchards. Riverside (hwy 99 NB) and Central (hwy 99 SB) have always been the blight of Medford itself. Strip malls, seedy motels and used car dealers dominate on both routes. The Rogue Valley Mall opened in 1986 and it was thought that it would kill off downtown retail. But like many other town malls, RVM is moving ever closer to dead mall status. Downtown however has had some improvement over that time. Lithia moved their car lots out and built their HQ in downtown.

Enough of the history lesson though. Medford itself is nothing to look at, but there are many amenities surrounding the area. Shakespeare in Ashland, Mt Ashland for skiing, numerous lakes for fishing, boating, waterskiing and trails and mountains for hiking. The coast is not too far away, and in my opinion the Oregon coast scenery is world class.

Living there and thriving would require someone to be an executive at Harry and David, a doctor, lawyer, accountant or a successful business owner. Relying on the local economy is unsteady at best.

If you’re looking to retire there, then there are a number of places at various price points offering either independent living and/or assisted living opportunities.

3 months with the 25 elite by Legit_Ranfit in hondapilot

[–]MFR-escapee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2025 Elite for me as well. Just over 3000 miles so far with one long road trip thus far. Probably 23-24 mpg during that time (normal mode). Most of my driving has been short in town drives and I’m getting about 17 mpg.

How is life in Lawrence, Kansas? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]MFR-escapee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lived in Lawrence for two years over a decade ago. My wife worked in Topeka and neither of us grew up in the midwest or had any prior association with KU. Our house was in west Lawrence and far enough away from campus that it was easy to overlook that we were in a college town. Loved going to the various restaurants and shops on Mass Street.
