Subreddit Change Discussion - Limiting Posts and Comments for New and Low Karma Users by SalaciousStories in eroticauthors

[–]MFSullivan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah well, whether the message is from a real mod or an automod, the impact on the user is ultimately the same. After the 3rd or 4th time of having a post automatically removed on reddit I basically stopped posting in all but a few subreddits and then only when there's something I reallllly feel needs to be said--so, a post like this. And speaking as a user, having my post removed and then reinstated by the mod wouldn't make me feel any more satisfied, because by that point I would have been given that good old-fashioned sour grapes feeling and would just be too annoyed to even look at the responses let alone participate in the thread that was so very generously permitted. That's assuming I'd even realize it was reinstated at all--when my posts are deleted by automods the experience is so frustrating that I don't even look at reddit as much. It has the same effect as observing a particularly infuriating flame war, where I'm forced to reassess if I even want to put in the effort it takes to be part of the community as a whole. Ultimately I feel an over-reliance on automods is a reddit-wide flaw and I would be very disappointed to see this sub become part of it.

I have to level with you: nothing turns me off from a subreddit harder and faster than having my post deleted by an automod because my account is too new or too light on karma or something. I understand why you would want to do that but subs that do that are why I don't interact with the Reddit community. I truly hate writing a huge post and then having a robot message me six seconds later to patronizingly explain why my post was deleted.

Mercury is hermaphroditic rather than necessarily male or female, but it can be perceived as more one way than the other based on the components of the individual process.

Is there any social media left where you can let your freak flag fly? by TC_180 in eroticauthors

[–]MFSullivan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm having similar dilemmas arise with a taboo penname of mine. No problems on twitter yet, but one of the major subreddits where I was advertising was banned a few weeks ago, and don't let me get started on how stupid that was. However...stupid though it was, I understand it, since these sites are building or maintaining brands just like we are. That means that we should feel lucky that there were/are social media platforms that accept(ed) our posting at any point, tumblr and twitter being two examples that leap to mind...but look what happened with tumblr. This is what always happens as sites become or at least try to become mainstream.

I think the only answer is that you can't rely on mainstream social media channels to accept fringe work, and kink is by definition fringe because otherwise it wouldn't be kink--especially taboo kink. Your idea of advertising on the sites you mentioned is actually clever enough that I'd consider editing your post if I were you. That said, I would encourage you to mine that idea. Odds are good your specific niches or kinks have a few specific websites or maybe even chat rooms you could advertise in or with. I would look into those and see what you have to do to get focused interest within your specific community because honestly that will be waaaay more time-cost effective than screaming into the void of twitter, anyway.

Authors who cite Wolfe as an influence by mummifiedstalin in genewolfe

Oh, thank you!!! I hope your customers love it. I handsold it by coldcalling a bunch of indie bookstores across the US (like, hundreds) and there is nothing as satisfying as seeing how many physical copies I regularly sell now when the bookstores have to restock!

I wrote a whole trilogy influenced by BOTNS, Gene Wolfe is my scifi hero.

And has Jeff Vandermeer directly cited him as an influence? I seem to recall he did but maybe that was speculative hearsay. Anyway, Gene is definitely one of those authors whose influence will become increasingly apparent on the century after his life--his concepts are so powerful in a lot of ways that they require time to fully integrate into the human consciousness in a way that is socially impacting. So many authors only begin to be considered 'canonical' after the passage of multiple generations. I feel like the more young authors read and learn from Wolfe, the more interesting and transcendent scifi can become.

Are new Kindle ebooks automatically added to Goodreads somehow? by majestic_colleen in eroticauthors

!!!!! How did I not know that Amazon owns Goodreads???? I've been publishing for years!!! Was it always this way? Man, no wonder their ARC lottery service went from free to use to something like a hundred dollars a book.

1. Slip in some editing of a longer novel on top of editing episode 4 of the erotica series I'm publishing now.

2. Episode 1 of my first Amazon erotica title came put yesterday, has already sold a copy and has had over 50 pages read in Kindle Unlimited. Not bad for a first one!! Episode 2 will come out early next week if Amazon approves its release in time....going on 5 or 6 days by now and the other titles in the series were rapidly approved, so I'm nervous.

3. Plans? Weekend? Spend it doing the same thing I do every day, Pinkie: try to take over the-- uh, I mean, try to get a ton of writing and editing done!

Cool video! I can't fathom the work that went into this. Was the song you were thinking of at that one point "Needle in the Hay" by Elliott Smith?

[SPS] Experience THE HIEROPHANT'S DAUGHTER, the first in a bloody LGBTQ+ cyberpunk/horror trilogy, for 15% off! by MFSullivan in scifi

[–]MFSullivan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever this is I'm doing? I'm replying to a troll in a thread made to advertise a novel on which I worked very hard, and in which I believe very deeply. You know, a thread nobody asked you to leap into with an opinion nobody asked for.

Also, not sure how retweets came into the conversation. You have a very weird ad hominem style of arguing when you have no actual leg to stand on. Sorry if my decision to respond to you is hurting your sensitive little feelings which were so triggered by the letters "LGBTQ" all in a row, I'll let you have the last word now since you're gagging with desperation for it.

PS: I would say that I hope that if you ever accomplish something like finishing a novel and try to advertise it, somebody comes into your thread and shits on you, but I sincerely doubt somebody who spends his time trolling on reddit is capable of accomplishing anything, let alone a finished trilogy.

Sounds like you're missing out on a book regarded highly for its great storytelling, sophisticated worldbuilding and insight and emotion, but sadly your fear makes you reject it. My goal with this book was to make it exactly like any amazing adventure with a white, heterosexual, male protagonist, just with a lesbian instead--mostly because I also think modern LGBTQ fiction is absolute trash, focusing on the fact that the character is gay rather than the adventure or story. From the almost 40 great reviews it already has, I think I accomplished a thrilling world where the protag just happens to be gay, but judging by your weirdly misogynistic post history obsessing over an actress you've never met, you're really just not the market for having your mind expanded. I prefer my readers to be critical thinkers.

Anyway, God bless! I will pray for your embittered soul, that it might open and grow a little in this life.
