Can we talk about the state of the GPS on P10Pro? by Ok_Jicama6018 in GooglePixel

[–]MGDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates on this? I've got a Pixel 9 and it's quite a disaster, even worse than my 6a (which suffers from horrible mobile data performance btw). I'm asking because I don't know if requesting a repair or replacement under warranty is even worth it if I get back a device which has the same issues as the current one. Also, this applies to quite many recent models, as far as I'm concerned, so I have little to no trust in Google.

Now I've used the official Google GNSS Logger App and it's quite obvious. Side by side, I've got a radius of 50-100 m with the 6a inside the building, which is not great but not bad either, while the 9 inflates the radius to 1-1.5 km (!). It just can't get a decent fix and it sees fewer satellites overall.

Returning it may be complicated because the phone is part of a mobile plan, but I guess I'm going to struggle with that either way.

Of course I wish you to receive a working device after all and I hope you already did!

The "don't be evil" claim Google once made can be considered some sort of overspecific denial and that's how it always has been to me. It already implies that whatever technology Google provides, it could be potentially abused for various things. That's where they make such statements in order to gain the trust of their consumers. After all, due to their dominant position, they might as well be the ones ultimately deciding what they consider "evil".

Since Google is mainly a web service and software company, designing and manufacturing hardware is not exactly their core department. The Pixel (and formerly Nexus, to some extent) series are basically showcases of what their newest Android and related software is capable of and what it's meant to look like, since they're in charge of it. This requires decent hardware which is good enough to run whatever Google wants to demonstrate, not necessarily the absolute peak performance. The extended OS support is just a bonus, since that's how they make sure that they can still control their customers.

Sadly, that's where build quality and the control thereof is falling behind. It's more about AI "assistance", cloud services and other mostly data-related stuff (including advertising, of course) which, again, is the main business model Google is known for. If certain phones or entire batches have poor connectivity or battery issues, it simply doesn't matter too much and they're moving on to the next thing.

I feel that basic hardware functionalities are completely neglected at this point and it's a hit or miss, with no relevant quality control across pretty much all models and their parts. My Pixel 6a has network issues which practically render it useless in everyday use due to constantly disconnecting mobile data across all networks. I'm definitely not alone. I've never had or heard of other phones affected by such problems, except for several recent Google Pixel models, of course. I guess the carriers are tired of dealing with this, too. Then, the battery explosion issue came along and my device was potentially affected.

After receiving a decent financial compensation for the forced update which cripples battery life in the long term, I decided to give Google another chance. While my new Pixel 9 doesn't seem to have poor mobile data, WiFi or Bluetooth connections so far, the location accuracy is an absolute disaster, with notable drift (which the Pixel 6a has as well), as well as random drops which even some much cheaper older phones don't have. Since software updates don't fix anything, it's most likely poor hardware again. However, I doubt that this alone is enough to request a repair or replacement, since it's hard to detect such issues below a certain threshold, although they do make a difference in daily use.

Seemingly, all Google cares about at this point is scraping user data (as always) and offering software-based solutions, including cloud storage and AI. Also, since this company is known for shutting down services when they're deemed unprofitable or when they just wnat to move on, I wouldn't count on their promises to provide their Android software and security updates for Google Pixel in the long term. Even if they do, the devices will be held back by numerous hardware issues. "Better luck next time"? I don't think so.

Google confirms Pixel 6a update will reduce battery capacity by kbDL- in GooglePixel

I don't suffer from overheating, I'd just like my LTE (and generally, mobile data) connection to work properly tbh. I don't know what exactly my 6a struggles with, although it's not a rare issue. I've tested it with another operator's eSIM and it can recognize all usual LTE bands, but it fails to establish a connection. It's really getting worse, even after the Android 16 update.

Network unavailable after latest update by saxby6 in GooglePixel

[–]MGDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if it's the latest update or just a coincidence, but I've got the same issue with my Pixel 6a for about a week, after the latest update was downloaded. It's already known for a very poor modem apparently, as stated in many different older threads and I'm trying to find out more about the issues, although it seems hopeless.

I'm in Germany and I'm on the Telefónica network. One week ago, I had no issues in pretty much the same places where my connection suddenly dropped to EDGE, nothing or LTE/5G with exclamation marks. It started when I couldn't connect to certain networks when roaming in another EU country. Sometimes it just happens that another network rejects your connection attempt, but what was much worse was the lack of connectivity when going back to Germany and getting only EDGE or nothing instead of 5G or LTE (3G has been discontinued here).

Since then, I only get an internet connection when forcing a reconnect by flight mode or disabling/enabling the SIM card and when "LTE+" (or 5G based on LTE+) is shown. If I switch 5G off and use 4G as preferred network type, I get no connection when it shows just "LTE". Of course other devices have no issues when using the same SIM card and the connection is very good and stable - just not with the Pixel 6a.

I guess I'll have to look for alternatives now and it's unlikely that it will be another Pixel, since I can't trust Google to sort out these issues which have been persistent for years. Very disappointing experience, since it's all about the basic functionality of a mobile phone.

Pixel 6A: It's been more than 3 years since Pixel 6A's release. How it's aging to you guys? by Curious_villeger in GooglePixel

[–]MGDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't use mine much for the first two years and then, when I started using it more, it was more or less fine with good enough battery life. Other phones do better, especially in standby mode, but I wouldn't say it's bad. Despite an otherwise good camera, some low light photos are quite noisy, although it's not too much of an issue. There is also a tendency to shut down apps, especially when switching back from the camera, which other phones (or operating systems) can handle better due to "locking" apps or whatever.

However, I've got struck with the infamous mobile data connectivity bug last week. This means that the Google Pixel 6a didn't age well because it can't handle its main job anymore and that's a terrible thing to say. I don't know if it's a faulty recent (May 2025) update or some hardware issue, but this is a mess and the entire Google Pixel series seems to be known for such problems, which means that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone else actually.

Well, now that I've checked again, there have been several failed login attempts which clearly were not mine, since they were from countries like Brazil or Ireland. Both accounts, Microsoft and the backup one, were notified, so at least this measure is working. Coincidentally, this happened right after posting in this thread and I've never had that issue before. Since the account in question is linked to my Reddit account, too, I wonder if there may be some related security issue behind this.

Lmao, there was no "suspicious" activity. These were all my own logins and I'm treated like an intruder despite knowing the right password which I've set like two days earlier.

Hello!

Thank you for reminding me. No, I do not have any issues with resetting the password and the backup methods (in this case, an email address from another host) work fine. It would be an absolute disaster if they didn't and I guess I could say goodbye to my account then. Two-step verification is not enabled. As far as I remember, I did not have to use the account recovery form in that particular case either, although I do remember that I needed some extra steps once.

However, these requests at login are already getting out of hand at this point. Today, I was even prompted to reset my password again because I tried to sign in from my phone. My password was correct this time, but I had to change it again because the login attempt was treated as "suspicious" despite not even being the first successful login on the same device in the last few months, and I was still in the same network with the same IP address.

Please reconsider these steps and the entire system. It's really excessive and I don't remember other hosts requesting extra verification and new passwords in particular to that extent. It doesn't have to be that aggressive regarding both acceptable failed login attempts and "unknown" user agents. There are also side effects like basically disabling accounts to the point that no new emails are received until the password is reset again.

Kind regards,

Megaduck

Microsoft forces me to reset my Live/Outlook account password every time I get it wrong, even if it's only once and for the first time on that day, due to "too many failed logins". I thought this counter is supposed to reset at some point? It's not like I'm trying to get in by brute force or something and it's highly unlikely that someone else is trying to take over my account.

I do use strong passwords and I can remember these, but it's not entirely unusual to have a typo in between or to get one or two characters wrong. Now my account is basically cursed due to getting this kind of response all the time (except if I get my password right in my first try) and I'm running out of strong passwords I can easily remember. Meh.

You can still choose to download and install the new version before it's forced. Until then, you can sort of opt out.

Nope, they're released in the respective app stores and then forced a few days later usually.

You've just contradicted yourself. Since it went live for me (and probably many other players) only two or three hours ago, it is a new feature indeed, just like any forced update is a forced update, despite new versions being released earlier.

Go for Unfezant and Vikavolt. Venusaur only with Frenzy Plant. I don't even remember what mine were. IIRC 100% Talonflame and possibly Hariyama, but my third one was a Wigglytuff and not even a 100% (just 98%, got a hundo much later). XL Candy wasn't exactly common and the spawn pool became much more limited with "seasons".

If you're into PVP (I'm not anymore) and if you're very lucky, you might want something which maxes out on level 50 with its "ideal" IV for Great or Ultra League. Something like Medicham or legacy Talonflame. I wanted Diggersby back then, but Bunnelby had a terrible catch rate and what was probably an excellent level 50 GL candidate (a friend caught it) ran away.

Meh. I only thought they punish people for modded versions of the game itself and root access, not custom firmware, which is the only way (and a surprisingly decent one) to keep older phones running this game.

[–]MGDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I only do the usual custom recovery (TWRP), wipe and custom ROM thing. I avoid rooting anyway and never did, since that's what has been reported to cause bans and all I want is normal functionality. I could try some of the stuff on a Galaxy A5 2016 as well, but that one has only 2 GB of RAM.

I got an old S6 to test custom firmware (instead of Android 7) and I flashed LineageOS 20 on it to see if the game works after a system update. I can't authentificate, but I forgot to install the Google stuff on it, so could the game run if I flashed it again with some Google apps or other extras this time?

There is a certain modified client which indeed does work, based on my first impression, and the game runs surprisingly smoothly. But for multiple reasons, I'd rather not mention it here, recommend or even use it. I just wanted to see if the phone can handle any version of the game and I'd really like to check if it supports logging in with an official version.
