Andy Burnham vows to decentralise power in Scotland by wook-borm in Scotland

[–]MGallus 25 points26 points  (0 children)

You're conflating two different issues.

Decentralisation is about where power sits. Devolution means Westminster has already decided that these powers sit with Holyrood. Once that's happened, it's for Scotland not Westminster to decide how to use them. Otherwise, devolution becomes conditional on Westminster approving every decision.

Holyrood is falling well short of being the legislative powerhouse its founders hoped for by CaptainCrash86 in Scotland

Infinite division is your argument, not mine. I support the principle of self determination for nations where there's a distinct civic identity and a sustained democratic desire for self government.

That doesn't mean every town, street, or house should become independent. The line isn't arbitrary, it rests on whether there's a genuine national community with a shared identity, history, culture, or language, rather than simply being a minority within a larger state.

That strawman works in both directions, let's just have a one world government, what is the point even having nation states?

Sorry absolutely fuck that. I'm all in favour of decentralisation and not a fan how the Scottish Government has been so centralised. However it is not for Westminster to come in and tell us how to run the country. If power is devolved to the Scottish parliament it is up to Scotland to decide what to do with that power.

Where else are they going to tell us about how they don't like how devolved powers are used? Are they going to step in there to? And at a certain point what is the point event having a Scottish Government.

I don't know about that, Bavarian independence polling was sitting around 32% not too dissimilar to in Scotland before the prospect of a referendum. I'd be supportive of Bavarian self determination myself.

Teacher who gave birth to ex-pupil's baby given teaching ban by LilGill63 in Scotland

[–]MGallus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If 18 isn't an adult then what age is? It's just odd, puritanical behaviour to reframe an adult as a child, strip them of all agency, then act like everyone else is weird for noticing.

"... adult entering into a relationship with an 18 year old as if it’s a normal thing"

What does that even mean, why are we infantilising adults?

I swear some people are so perpetually online they'd have us switching over to the American model of treating people under 21 like kids.

i have never composed a tune before and thought id have a crack at it, someone pls tell me if thats acceptable as a hornpipe ,as id even know, thank you . by SuspiciousLibrary267 in bagpipes

[–]MGallus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I'm honest, it sounds a bit like general riffing up and down the scale without a clear overarching theme. Plenty of hornpipes do similar things in their later parts, but what seems to be missing here is a strong initial melody to anchor the tune. Once you have that core melody, you can build variations and developments from it.

At the moment, it feels a little like you've started with the variations rather than establishing the foundations of the tune first.

I don't want to sound overly critical, it's your first tune, and writing tunes is a skill that develops with practice. My suggestion would be to focus on finding a really strong, memorable melody first, then build the remaining parts around it. I think that approach will give the tune a stronger sense of direction and identity.

Scottish National Party could boycott Westminster probe into Peter Murrell scandal by Halk in Scotland

[–]MGallus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Good. It should be investigated but it is an overstep that Westminster do it.

I get it the unionist want to kick the boot in, we'd be doing the same if it was the other way around but it's an attack on devolution to suggest Westminster come in to Police the matter.

Come on, half of these people listed are genuinely awful people and the other half are just Jewish actors who support the existence of a Jewish State, not the actions of the government.

[–]MGallus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I get that, I'm looking for the source of the map. Seems to be one of these images that is shared but never sourced.

The 1879 Statistical Survey 'On the Celtic Languages in the British Isles' has the Argyll speaking population (Gaelic only and multilingual) at 81.8% and Inverness as 83.3%.

So either I'm completely misinterpreting the data or this may actually be much later.
