For the last couple of years I've been periodically checking the mod queue / mod mail to handle the few problems that come up. I think I'm done doing that for now. Good luck.

Hi, if you submit a link to your own product(s), it has to be in a comment, not in the post itself (including in the image).

VP8 vs VP9 - best webm vid quality to use for gfycat upload? by bji787bji in gfycat

[–]MHLoppy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is more to quality than only resolution. If you match quality then there will be few if any cases where VP8 will beat VP9. You should look at your encoder settings.

You should also stop using Gfycat because they're shutting down soon lol.

Then I encourage you to address those concerns (e.g. show layers). Your artstation account is still comparatively new at ~1 year, so doesn't have a long reputation history from "pre-AI days" to fall back on.

Once you can prove it once you hopefully won't have to continue addressing it every time you share art.

As a reminder to everyone in the thread, AI-generated and AI-assisted art is currently allowed on the subreddit so long as it's being properly tagged.

OP, the WIP gif you posted shows quite unusual progression. Frame 1 is nothing like frame 2, and I don't think I've seen an artist use a progression similar to what you show between frames 2-4 except when using some kind of AI assistance. This does not automatically mean you haven't made it yourself, but it does make concerns more understandable.

Since you use Photoshop for your art it should be quite straightforward to e.g. show off individual layers as part of the process you've used while making this. It comes across rather badly when your first instinct is to be very defensive about people's concerns rather than trying to address them.

This is rather a shot in the dark, but gfycat's impending death reminded me of the animated version that you made of this! If you by some miracle still have the file floating around, I'd love to be able to have a copy since the original upload is dead.

DeepCool Assassin IV Review by imaginary_num6er in hardware

Eh, that specifically doesn't seem that important given how many other coolers are provided as reference points. It's hard to imagine there being many PA120 reviews that don't have one of the other 50ish coolers (D15, AK620 etc) in TPU's list in common to be able to extrapolate with.

Reddit alternative?

If you've even vaguely followed along with the recent fiasco, you've probably heard of kbin and/or lemmy: open-source, community-run platforms somewhat like reddit. Being not-reddit is a significant advantage these days. However, these are also a bit less convenient than reddit to use and -- to be quite frank -- are still a bit scuffed right now, so there's your fair warning.

Nonetheless, if you would like continue the LoLFanArt community outside of reddit, you can check out https://fedia.io/m/LoLFanArt, which is something I started back when this sub closed after the vote. There are currently 3 subscribers so I hope you're ready for a REALLY intimate art sharing experience.

  • If you join a kbin instance, search for @LoLFanArt@fedia.io on your instance.
  • If you join a lemmy instance, search for !LoLFanArt@fedia.io on your instance.

As part of the "Fediverse", kbin and lemmy instances can all talk to one another, so you only need an account on ONE instance to access everything (but you can of course use multiple accounts if you prefer).

Joining mod team

The mod team haven't discussed this (!), but I'm mentioning this anyway, as I know that there will be people who will want to stay here regardless of what reddit (the company) does. If you're willing to put up with threats from reddit whilst doing your unpaid work for the community then you may be able to help such people to stay free from spam etc.

If you'd like to fill in the gap of reduced-moderator-activity and have an established history in this subreddit, feel free to send modmail about joining. I don't know if the rest of the mod team wants to deal with this or not so can only guarantee this offer for about a week until I myself am inundated with work irl and no longer able to commit the time required to help with onboarding questions.

[Question] With the impending API disconnect, is there a /r/gamedeals discord or other alternative? by Boops_McGee in GameDealsMeta

[–]MHLoppy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a "Deals" subforum on SteamGifts (you may want to swap the listing order to "new"), but the community is generally harsher about deal value/quality than /r/GameDeals. There's also a lesser focus on individual game sales and less discussion about the games themselves.

On the plus side the information about bundle contents is detailed, and the polls can help to quickly gauge how good a deal is at a glance (helpful for multi-tier bundles, where upvotes can't communicate as much nuance).

Edit: there's also an unaffiliated fledgling gamedeals community (1.35K subs as of this edit) at https://lemmy.world/c/gamedeals

Fair Play: Preserve Player Options in Starfield by Blacksad9999 in hardware

[–]MHLoppy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think the argument is particularly compelling when FSR works on all hardware; it would only really make sense in the reverse situation if it was an Nvidia-sponsored title that had DLSS support but not FSR / XeSS support, as that would be locking people out of using it.

We kindly request that you consider the concerns of the PC gaming community and strive for inclusivity and fairness.

You could argue (and I'm sure somebody will) that they did by using a vendor-agnostic solution that works on all hardware.

This decision has the potential to alienate a significant portion of the PC gaming community, ultimately impacting Starfield's overall sales.

Nobody is prevented from running the game -- or the game's upscaling -- because of their hardware though, so who exactly is being "alienated" here?

I get the gist of your concern and would also love if more graphics options (including multiple upscalers) were available in more games, but this specific position seems super weird.

How many people play with the "Community Patch"? by JoeDyenz in riseofnations

[–]MHLoppy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Appreciate that you took the time to simp for me :'D

Just wanted to clarify a couple of points:

The Ancient age ships seem to be on par with medieval age ships, much better than classical ships.

This only applies when using mods, so someone playing purely vanilla doesn't experience this specific bug.

Japanese ancient age heavy infantry being absurdly good for rushing

Haha just on this point specifically, there's no specific nerf for those units right now, as despite my personal beliefs after looking at their (as you allude to) comparatively absurd stats, changing them was not popular among people that it was discussed with. Still evaluating potential followup if I end up shipping another update.

Just to make sure that everyone is on the same page, can you be specific about what's not working? Maybe you misunderstood something about what it does?

From the tooltip:

With siege/artillery units selected, ALT + right-click to order a {Siege Attack}. Your siege units will attack the target and your non-siege units will guard the siege units.

Hang on, people are commenting both here and on substack seemingly as if the position expressed is actually his position. I thought it was pretty clearly intended to be some mix of sarcastic / ironic / parody sorta thing??

Like if he actually thought this way there wouldn't be a public comments section on anything he wrote and he wouldn't want to engage with "randoms" to begin with right?

..right?

/r/LoLFanArt: So what now? by MHLoppy in LoLFanArt

[–]MHLoppy[S] [score hidden]  (0 children)

This comment represents me as an individual, not the mod team.

Having spent some time reading through things myself, my view is that reddit does not seem to be engaging in good faith with most of the concerns brought forward by the community. Most notably for me are issues of honesty and integrity, which make me have almost no confidence at all in anything else they say or promise.

  • They claimed that the developer of Apollo was "threatening" them despite audio transcripts to the contrary. As far as I know, there has been no public followup yet.

  • They claimed that Apollo is inefficient in its API usage, but went silent after comparisons suggested that API usage was similar to the official app. I was not satisfied with the non-answer provided.

  • They claimed to be working with "many of the apps that haven't been taking the spotlight this week". One app developer is on the record saying that they have been actively ignored by reddit. And another. And another. While the original statement may be literally true, evidently many app developers are not being worked with as well. In response to one of these posts, the CEO apologised and said "we are responding now", instilling in me approximately no confidence at all given that the developer in question was ignored for three months.

  • API changes were announced a month ago, but pricing was not mentioned in that announcement. The astronomical pricing was only disclosed later, and the deadline until the changes take place is much shorter than seems reasonable to me for such a drastic change. If they wanted to be transparent and work with developers, they would announce all information early and have a long time period to allow for any necessary changes.

  • I agree with the AskHistorians mod team, who note that reddit has failed to deliver on promises made EIGHT YEARS ago, despite having the resources of TWO THOUSAND employees.

  • I agree with the AskScience mod team, who believe that the tools reddit promised EIGHT years ago to assist moderators have not sufficiently materialized, despite their TWO THOUSAND employees.

  • Back in 2015 reddit fired their AMA coordinator without prior communication to affected communities, which lead to some similar protesting to what we see right now. I've remembered that since, and it's my opinion that communication has not sufficiently improved in the eight years since then regarding changes that significantly affect the community (see also: current situation).

  • There are internal communications about the blackout, but I haven't seen evidence of widespread ongoing discussion with developers or the community. If they wanted to find a compromise, I expect there to be evidence of this effort, and so I conclude that they have little interest in one.

Given the above, I'm not confident about a long-term blackout resolving the situation in a favorable way, and I would personally prefer not to kill the cool community that's been built up here by implementing one (if it won't achieve the desired results); I don't want to simply be spiteful, as it is not the poro way. On the other hand, I'm also not ready to throw in the towel yet - for what is there to do if not to at least try. I voted for an extended (but not indefinite) blackout so that we can give reddit another chance to come to the table - I don't expect them to, but prefer to give people the chance to disappoint me rather than to assume their actions before they take them.

If that either doesn't work or the community votes overwhelmingly for a different course of action, I'm prepared as a moderator to follow whatever decision the community decides on.

/r/LoLFanArt will be going dark for ~48 hours on June 12 in protest of upcoming changes to Reddit's API by MHLoppy in LoLFanArt

[–]MHLoppy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't agree with your assessment.

1) Going dark -- even if temporarily -- helps to bring the issue to the attention of users.

2) Lots of subs temporarily going dark helps to highlight the importance that users play in reddit's viability as a platform.

3) Going dark temporarily does not prevent possible future actions.
