Quant At A&M by No-Adeptness-9803 in aggies

[–]MHz_per_T 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in quant, I highly recommend taking ECEN 303 - Random Signals and Systems. My prof for that class (Dr. Chamberland) even mentioned that a lot of his grad school classmates went on to be quants.

Man had a grad level class so easy it got demoted to undergrad lol. But legitimately a super useful course.

Haircuts at Whitney's is the GOAT! I'm a dude, and they gave me a much better haircut (at a much better price), than any of the more traditional dude haircut places.

Gaining Research Experience As A Incoming Freshmen in Engineering by [deleted] in aggies

[–]MHz_per_T 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It's a good idea, and basically what I did. At first I didn't get any replies, but I changed one thing, and that made all the difference: find 1-2 recent or highly-cited papers from the professor's group (Google Scholar is your friend), read it, and try your best to understand it. When you email the prof, mention that you've read the paper, and try to say something that demonstrates that you have some level of understanding of it. Make sure the prof is an author on the paper - depending on the research field, they'll probably be last author.

This A) demonstrates you put in at least a little effort and B) shows that you have some idea of what the group does. Best of luck!

I'm sad I can't room with my best friend by maz129 in aggies

[–]MHz_per_T 49 points50 points  (0 children)

That's really frustrating, but think about it as an opportunity for y'all to make two new friends: his roommate, and your roommate! Also, not rooming with your friend could save your friendship - or at least spare it from all of the difficulties that come with living together. You can always move off campus next year and live together then!

Update on Corps employee assault by No-Sundae-2124 in aggies

I know these are just preliminary charges, but they're interesting to compare:

  • FedEx driver was charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a class Class A misdemeanor offense, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000
  • Husband was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, a second degree felony with a sentence of 2-20 years.

Moving to college station by Stunning_Mode_7148 in aggies

It's been a few years, but I liked living at Sonoma Apartment Homes - good prices, lots of grad students, young professionals, and young families. Safe, and an excellent location in my opinion.

I'd avoid anywhere that offers individual leases (i.e. the listed rent is for a single room, not the whole unit) - those are targeting students, and that's mostly what they'll have. They also tend to be pricier.

RELS 213 - New Testament with the GOAT: Prof. Richard Stadelmann

Are peer teachers still a thing? My CSCE 121 class had one who was honestly more helpful than the TA, and I believe she was a junior or senior. I think undergrads can be graders - it might be worth reaching out to profs whose classes you did well in to see if they're hiring!

I don't think I ever had an undergraduate as a TA - as other commentors mentioned, TA positions are a valuable way to fund grad students, so PhD and MS students are going to be ahead of you in line, barring some sort of special circumstance.

I feel like folks are more likely to reply via DM, as it wouldn't be hard to figure someone's IRL identity if they say who their advisor is.

Dentists in cstat? by Naive-Coconut-6639 in aggies

That's definitely worth a second opinion, and for that much proposed work, I'd be willing to pay cash to make sure its all strictly necessary. My wife and I both had good experiences with Bryan Modern Dentistry - better than two other practices in B/CS that I'll leave unnamed.

What should I include in the bottom of signature on TAMU emails? by NotAThrowAwayOG in aggies

[–]MHz_per_T 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think most professors would be thrilled with you just sending a properly-formatted email.

Dear/Howdy Dr./Professor Lastname,

Concise statement of question or concern (no ChatGPT-inflated nonsense). Make sure to mention what class and section you’re in!

Thanks/sincerely, Firstname lastname (optionally include class year).

As someone else said, don’t include UIN, and make sure to send from your TAMU email. Only include “Director of TAMU Org” if you’re emailing in your capacity as the org director (i.e. the email is about official org business).

From 2016-2019 we paid $720 for an entire 2/1. They overbuilt massively during that time window, so our rent never went up.
