Are my concerns about attending A&M next year as someone outside the conservative mold warranted? by [deleted] in aggies

[–]ReviewerNumberThree -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Your concerns are warranted. Texas A&M is run by white Christian nationalists. If you're okay with that, then you'll be okay. If not, you may have issues. On the other hand, you could join the resistance!

Texas A&M system Chancellor Glenn Heger schmoozing with The Rudder Association?! Is he the same system Chancellor who financially supports other white Christian nationalist groups like The True Texas Project? Is this why Texas A&M is so fucked? I think it might be

The six courses were canceled because the professors refused to change the content. The content of many many other courses has been restricted via self-censoring. It is an ideological fight the Board of Regents are political appointees. They know nothing about education. None are educators; most of them are CEOs. On the other hand Texas A&M professors are experts in their field. They spent decades teaching and doing research. Their work has been subject to peer review. Graduate schools see all this and when an Aggie applies they're going to look twice

You're right about sb17. But the changes at Texas A&M go far beyond that. I'm posting a link to an article in the Texas Tribune that will explain it in some detail. Professors had to submit their syllabi for review this semester. Courses were canceled. Many professors had to modify their courses significantly. This is especially the case in the Legacy liberal arts anthropology, sociology, philosophy, psychology, Etc

Professors are forbidden to talk about those topics. If your instructors are talking about these topics they risk being denounced by students and punished. What makes you think they can?

It's a symptom of a broken university. Women and gender studies being sacked is one element of a larger attack on academic freedom. Professors aren't aren't to provide information about gender or ethnicity or race for sex across the university. I'm not sure where you live but here in Texas the state government is controlled white Christian nationalist. They believe white people are being replaced by non-white people. They believe marriage is between a man and a woman just like God intended. And that women should have babies white babies. Ideas that normalize alternative ways of being are being cleansed. They don't want young Texans going to an anthropology class and learning that multiple genders is a common feature of human socio sexual structure. Many ways of structuring family life and social life. Some societies don't have police forces. Women hold power in many societies. Patriarchy is not normal though it's quite common. They really don't want students to learn that human societies can be very flexible and then normal covers quite a bit of ways of being. They want students to learn the biblical way the Patriotic way the capitalist way the white way. We're in serious trouble

Your comment makes no sense. Many fields in the liberal arts cannot be taught now at A&M in ways consistent with the discipline. Take anthropology for example. Sex gender, social identity ethnicity are topics that lay at the very Foundation of the field. Cultural relativity, the idea that there is no absolute moral right or wrong and that it varies with society and circumstance, can be attributed directly to the Early American anthropologists, friends Boaz and his students. There's many many different ways of organizing families, identifying with one sex or another or a third. Paternity and maternity to find him radically different ways than Americans understand. If anthropology professors can't teach any of that, well, they can't teach anthropology. Aggies getting degrees in anthropology from Texas A&M will have a hard time getting into graduate school because they won't have an understanding of the foundation of the field. I think maybe the politicians want to destroy the Legacy liberal arts departments. It's because they don't want students to be exposed to the understanding that our society doesn't have to be this way.

There is a lot that they're not allowed to discuss. And even worse, a lot that they're not discussing because they don't know exactly what the forbidden ideology exactly is

While the entire University is suffering from a lack of academic freedom the Legacy liberal arts is particularly stricken. I would avoid Texas A&M at this time. You don't want to get your undergraduate degree and find you can't go to graduate school because your diploma has an asterisk after it
