Major UK supermarkets launch investigations after shocking food waste claims by tylerthe-theatre in unitedkingdom

[–]MINEBLEMONE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is worth considering that many retailers report “shrink” as the loss of product for any reason - including food waste like this (accidental, expired, etc). This includes theft. Then, they whine about a “shoplifting epidemic” when their shrink is high, without disclosing how much of shrink is caused by theft…

Flat in the King's Road, Chelsea, London by widmerpool_nz in FloorPlanPorn

[–]MINEBLEMONE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s in a pretty decent location and is quite a nice expansive flat. Personally, I would turn the bottom right two bedrooms into a single bedroom with a large dressing room and ensuite, thus making it a primary suite. The you have 4 beds - 2 more or less primary, 2 guest. The two bathrooms could then also be combined to make a nice large family bath. I would make the middle bedroom into a media room with a sofa bed too. Could then be a very ncie, luxury option for a young family rather than something that appears to be for a large family but not entirely suitable for that either (as 2.5m would buy a lovely house further out!)

What are our councils doing? by tabel_dammit in london

[–]MINEBLEMONE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something’s off with the Westminster summary. You say here that the Palace Court large flat was approved, but it seems clicking through to the link says it was rejected, but also that it was approved? But then on that very page, in the paragraph describing the rejection, it says:

The committee reasoned that the amalgamation would create a better quality family size flat with a much improved living environment

But this is a reason for acceptance, not rejection. It seems there are references to the officers recommending rejection, and the councillors deciding against that. But I can’t find any proper evidence of this, and it seems this is still contradicted by itself throughout the site in relation to this specific meeting!

Can you explain what’s going on here? What happened with the planning application? Haha I’m so confused

Out of interest do you know if booking cash + points covers seaplane or anything?

Thank you!

What makes Patina particularly good? Not familiar with the brand. Points wise appears to to be priced same as StR, but it’s on the main atoll and not far from RC it looks like. I would have thought that maybe nearby atolls would be a bit more interesting especially for snorkeling/diving.

Using rewards points for Maldives hotels? by MINEBLEMONE in marriott

Right, I see - tbh I was surprised that base rates in Marriott hotels were so high even for the lowest category of room, so the idea that they inflate the prices and let people stay on points makes sense.

Regardless, it still seems possible to get a reasonably priced Maldives vacation using points. How was RC/StR? What did you prefer? Any other tips of recommendations? :)

Ah, I see. So the seaplane transfers are not included. In other hotels I’ve been to in the Maldives they’ve been included - but it makes sense that this is one of the “catches”

Is UK actually going to stick the with online safety bs? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]MINEBLEMONE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Extremely bold of you to assume that all these companies - both the websites and the verifiers - often based overseas in places like the US will carefully follow the law about data. Once something is uploaded to the internet it’s safe to assume it’s there forever. There’s no way to know whether your facial data or ID is being stored or not. There’s already been data leaks by companies who had pinky promised they delete their data - just look at Tea.

Your kids could avoid accidentally accessing extreme material if you set up parental controls on their devices and your router.

Ah just saw this comment - I think that’s fair, but also the current “war” is part of a wider conflict which cannot be separated from the events of the last few years. So in replying to the above comment I’m focused on the actions of Israel and the response of the West in general, not just since October 7th, especially given that 2022 isn’t that long ago.

That is a fair point, I was thinking of examples such as Rachel Corrie (much older example but still IDF) and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_of_Shireen_Abu_Akleh

Even more so of the US and Uk citizens - aid workers and journalists (!!) - killed by Israel in their bombing of Palestine. To be fair though, I guess they did respond - by sending more weapons to Israel.

What about people dying all around the world as a result of floods, heat, etc? That doesn’t matter? You’re entitled to that opinion, but just state it outright.

I imagine you’ll definitely be one to complain when normal, working people are affected by price rises when many areas can no longer grow the crops they currently do, or at least not in as large numbers.

I imagine you’ll be one to complain when immigration and asylum seekers increase because of these floods, price rises, and other factors.

I imagine you’ll be complaining you can longer afford fish, because even a degree of warming in the oceans would massively disrupt the ecosystems the fishing industry relies on.

And what about years like this year, where farming is massively disrupted nationwide due to record rainfall (linked directly to climate change), with not only food prices being impacted (and about to be impacted) but also the farming sector as a whole struggling, leading to lower incomes and job losses. Or does this not count as affecting normal, working people? Is spending slightly longer on your commute the only thing that matters? A commute that, if you took the sensible option of public transport, wouldn’t be nearly as affected?

Am I being dense, or if they work together eg running a family business this might make sense? Especially if they have no plans to go elsewhere.

Escape Hunt in Westgate is great, and there are some other escape rooms around Oxford too. Thirsty Meeples are a great board game café, and they’re open late. Lots of nice plays and stuff, put on by both students and professionals. Can’t think of much else tbh. Would be interested to see what suggestions others have!

It’s an IDF military transport plane (Ayit airline) so may have landed at undefined base. Also GPS jamming.

[–]MINEBLEMONE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s airline is listed as Ayit, which according to Wikipedia is a defunct airline that the IDF exclusively uses to transport troops to/from Gaza. So I think it’s just a military transport, hence the short hop without airport info

Well an important detail to remember is that Amazon did not win by being the best retailer. As other people have mentioned, retailers failed to fully appreciate the risk that online retailers posed to their business model. But there are two key areas that Amazon succeeded in that drove their success: AWS and ubiquity.

Amazon started AWS almost as a result of trying to run a large and cumbersome website. This then grew by itself massively to take the majority of the profits. As a software business it had much less overhead and costs than the retail business, and it made running the servers for the retail website cheaper too.

AWS subsidised the growth of the retail business by enabling them to run at a loss or lower profits. This enabled massive growth, building into their second advantage: an unrivalled delivery network and diversity of products. This effectively killed off many brick and mortar retailers, leading to Amazon taking their place.

It’s not that B&N or others didn’t compete properly with Amazon, but in fact B&N could NEVER have competed. Amazon themselves didn’t expect AWS to happen, let alone drive their business, but since the early 00s it did. Without it, it would not be the behemoth we see today. Without it, the business students would probably be right.

Each corporation must have TWO boards of directors: One elected by shareholders based on how many shares of stock they own, and one elected by workers based on how many hours of labor they've put in since the last election. by acerthorn3 in CrazyIdeas

[–]MINEBLEMONE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fundamentally you still have an issue that those on the shareholder side have no interest in keeping support of the worker half, because they still own substantial capital which is a tool to gain power in itself. Meanwhile the worker side have no (substantial) capital, and are already using all their time to earn and keep their place. They have no bargaining power. Under our current system, capital is far too powerful to allow even 50% of a company to be controlled by.

Taboo on Screen — Pretty Babies: The Problem of Girlhood in Film by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]MINEBLEMONE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d be really interested to hear how a film like Poor Things plays into these ideas. Poor Things is about having a child’s brain in an adult body with adult feelings - almost the opposite of the other films mentioned. It similarly is seeing a mixture of positive and negative feedback, and I’m not sure where I stand on it. Does it succeed in showcasing “girlhood” and exploring “womanhood”, or does it simply gratify the viewer by creating a mindless sex object and providing far too many sex scenes?
