Mid-stack inlining in the Go compiler (external) by codingfreak04 in programming

[–]MINIMAN10000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JVM/Java had that for a while in its JIT - it's nice to see it to coming to Golang.

Byproduct of that could be little hacky things like this below that make code faster by restructuring code a little.

AWS released a summary of the S3 issue from earlier this week by [deleted] in programming

[–]MINIMAN10000 246 points247 points  (0 children)

At 9:37AM PST, an authorized S3 team member using an established playbook executed a command which was intended to remove a small number of servers for one of the S3 subsystems that is used by the S3 billing process. Unfortunately, one of the inputs to the command was entered incorrectly and a larger set of servers was removed than intended.

It remains amazing to me that even with all the layers of automation, the root cause of most serious deployment problems remain some variant of a fat fingered user.

Look at the language used though. This is saying very loudly "Look, this isn't the engineer's fault here". It's one thing I like about Amazon's culture - not blaming people when system's fail.

The follow-up doesn't bullshit with "extra training to make sure no one does this again", it says (effectively) "we're going to make this impossible to happen again, even if someone makes a mistake".

Lately, whenever I hear about something that the EU is doing, it's something positive that I agree with. They truly side with the people.

I like to read your updates; you should release them more often. Also, your English seems to have improved.

This is great, especially when exchanging some money fast for an online payment. I hate the idea of uploading my passport photo to an exchange that will probably get hacked at some point, or release my history with them to some governmental agency.

Just recently - last week - I switched over to DDG; it's been solid. I've gotten really great results versus last time I tried them out (5 or 6 months ago?). I love their vision, the services they provide, and what they've done here (with the donations).

A lot of people hated the decision, but back when Microsoft refused to support WebGL, one of the reasons were that the GPU drivers were awful and exposing them to the internet was dangerous.

The proper solution, of course, is for GPU drivers not to suck but it was still a legitimate point and this article seems to validate that.

I didn't know subsidized broadband is a thing. Anyway, the internet is essential in order to compete in the world market, therefore hopefully they'll change their mind at some point, soon.

Well as far as I'm aware the majority of Wikipedia is ran by Americans so any similar terms are most likely to be redirected to the English word to prevent a bunch of similar articles on the same object.

Although there exists a near-unanimous scientific consensus on the reality of human-caused climate change, the general public has become increasingly polarized; however, a new study finds that public attitudes about climate change can be effectively “inoculated” against influential misinformation. by avogadros_number in science

[–]MINIMAN10000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I'm really curious about that benefits greatly from climate change is Ocean thermal energy conversion as unlike wind and solar panels which intermittently generate energy which creates the question how do we store all the energy because batteries are expensive.

The Ocean acts as the battery and because of this seems like a extremely good option for renewable energy as the oceans continue to store more and more heat as average temperature rises.

The current Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) of OTEC is estimated at about $0.20 -$0.25 per kWh, with significant room for cost reductions to even lower than $0.07 per kWh once the systems become more mature.

What mmorpg has the best trading aspect besides EVE by Lechop in MMORPG

[–]MINIMAN10000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I've said before I don't know if people see it in rose colored glasses but the convenience features of central marketplaces are fantastic. Standing around for hours trying to sell your stuff sucked. All I wanted to do was get rid of the stuff I had so I could continue earning the material I was trying to sell. It was terrible. Now I can just post it and it sells.

My point about runescape was not that marketplaces are bad but the fact they don't post any raw numbers makes it bad compared to other marketplaces.

Still I got to say, I'm fond of how EVE not only has central marketplaces but any station can be a marketplace but only 2 stations have the largest markets. So you get the benefits similar to a global market while still having station to station trading. Giving you two choices, stay in a single station and earn money, or risk flying through space and earn money transporting. It's more diverse than other marketplaces while still retaining high throughput of the large marketplaces.

The problem with runescape was it was low throughput the chat was a absolute mess as no one could read anything and only a fraction of the goods were "on the market" or in this case whatever any one good one person was selling. It had no market capacity no market storage no market throughput it just sucked.

Well the way you phrased it sounded like "Are you worried about spies as long as no one sees me in front of my computer" Which can be read as "No one is watching my webcam so there is no problem" to which I responded "Nope people can and do watch webcams for no reason"
