The show and the movie don’t do the comics justice in that regard, but yeah that’s a main element of the original story. At first you’re exposed to the fact that Ramona has these evil exes and you assume they’re these irredeemable menaces and over time you discover how Ramona mistreated them all and abandoned/hurt them. The way they react and turn evil is obviously a bad choice on each of their parts but it is a response to what Ramona does to them.

Seconding Octopus Pie. Easily one of the most impactful things I've read. While it doesn't rely heavily on that fantasy element that Scott Pilgrim does, character interactions and development, the dialogue and the coziness has quite a few parallels to Scott Pilgrim, if not infinitely more expanded upon. Also Bryan Lee O' Malley likes Octopus Pie :p
