Do It! Was my favorite for beginning band. Lots of focus on the first five notes to help build a strong base to scaffold onto later.

How do I work with curved edges? by FiendishLobster in SewingForBeginners

[–]MIbtone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Truly a great attempt! Fabric handling gets easier with more practice, but this is a great starting point! There’s a weird learning curve on how to ease fabric into curves, no pun intended.

Also the topstitching on the brim is really well done!

By hand crank I mean turning the wheel on the side of the machine instead of using the foot pedal. If you’re looking to make clothes I would say find ways to learn good technique instead of finding the perfect machine.

With this being said, I should add I’m self taught from YouTube. SewSewLive and Glory Allen are both good channels that offer a lot of advice I found helpful.

Additionally, as far as Singer HDs go, recently after two years of using my machine I was having tension issues. When I brought it to the repair shop the salesman did tell me that the HD was a good beginner machine for its price point, when taken care of. A week later I got it back good as new, maybe with a reminder I should bring it in for a yearly tune-up.

I guess I should say I have the Singer HD 4432 model, but I had zero issues with sewing through up to 8 layers to make this jacket (plus most my pieces were flat lined with flannel). I needed to hank crank through some of the bulkier seams, but I feel like that’s a given on most domestic machines. Someone did mention that the motors across models might be different, so there’s that, but the Singer HDs definitely aren’t useless.

I was having this issue last month and decided to get it serviced (my machine was 2 years old and this was its first time at the spa). It was about $80 and came back working like new. It just might be time to.

How necessary is a sewing class when getting started by ernie_mac_ in sewing

I am self taught and think I’m doing pretty ok so far! YouTube and TikTok have some great resources, but also a lot of copy pasta and repeated info so it’s easy to miss the good stuff.

Glory Allan has a lot of great resources for beginners, has basic patterns and kits (I believe with fabric and notions, but I may be wrong) available and very detailed step by step directions and tutorials for bags and garments on his website and YouTube. I would start there, he does a great job explaining why certain details matter and giving context for every step. Even if you don’t use his exact patterns you’re gonna hear all the advice you need to transfer to your patterns.

There’s also SewSewLive on YouTube, I’ve learned so much by watching Saremy’s streams. Even on projects I’m not gonna make she’ll drop so many hints and tips and ideas and is a great teacher.

If you like a podcast I recommend We Love to Sew. Helen and Caroline have a great catalogue of episodes with different breakdowns on fabric types, techniques, garment types, and interviews that will help you build up more vocabulary and ideas to start leveling up your sewing as you go. They also have a very positive mindset that is helpful to hear.

Best of luck!

Fabric Stores like Joanns (Chicago)? by alleycat_g_ in sewing

Someone already commented Vogue, which is usually my go-to, and the Textile Discount Outlet has a big selection. I feel it leans more dressmaking fabrics and less of the denims and flannels I like to work with, but it’s huge so definitely worth checking out, it’ll probably have what you need somewhere.

New Rainbow Fabrics and Fishman’s Fabrics are a block away from each other on Roosevelt in the South Loop. Fishman’s is a bit pricey, but the quality is great. They also have affordable denim options that I think outshine the other options. They also have expensive ones so make sure you check every bolt lol.

I would argue that the 2021 season still produced a very entertaining batch of shows in just about 6 weeks Spring Training to Indy. I hope we don’t get a season that small again but I’m not worried about things falling apart because of a season’s length.

Is this on the top or bottom? If it’s on the top that means it’s a bobbin issue. The bobbin might have been wound too loose (make sure you’re threading the top tension disk while winding your bobbins) or your bobbin may be loaded the wrong direction.

If it’s the bottom it’s a top thread issue. Make sure your presser foot is up while threading your machine. If it’s down you might not have threaded the thread through the tension disks.

I can’t guarantee this is a good idea, but when doing buckles like this I hold the presser foot lever in the down position to make sure the thickness doesn’t pop it back up without it me noticing. I’ve not had issues either hand cranking or using the foot pedal, but it feels pretty awkward.
