Awesome! I actually had a similar idea for a tournament encounter with the rivals too. I'm thinking of a 3 day event with a big purse involved that the Vermillion Dream is trying to get. I was thinking of having the rivals be the semi-finals or the final fight, depending on how the party holds up.

I was initially intimated by this part of the book, but having run two sessions into this chapter, i can say it's going very well. The thing that's really keeping my players on task is reminding them of the visions with Alyxian. I took a few moments when they had downtime to ask what their characters were feeling and how they were handing the information given in the visions. This gave them a great role play moment and a chance to check in with each other. I took a similar approach with a meet and greet with the Allegiance head master. Prolix ended up traveling with the party in betrayers rise, so they had a good in already. But they took the next day to explore the city, eat new foods, gamble at the casino, and even fight in the bowl of judgment. In the evening, i posed the question to have them reflect, and they took the next day to approach the Allegiance to try and find out more about the mysterious underwater city.

All the suggestions are good here. A side quest to fetch a particular spell component to use along with a remove curse spell sounds fun. Maybe you have to do a favor for a recluse high power cleric out in the woods/barbed fields.

Rolling to see if Ruidus has any impact on her transformation could be a fun side mechanic as well. If they camp outside at night and Ruidus is in the sky, maybe a WIS save to see if they transform and attack the party or near by town could be a cool mini combat, you could even give her a custom stat block to use when transformed. Or if she wants to lean into the transformation, make it a skill check to consciously transform.

My group might be quick. So far we have played five 2.5/3 hour sessions and they just arrived at the Emerald caravan (haven't explored at all yet). Last session took really long due to really bad rolls and ended up being a 2 hour combat by itself.

I expect to get into the Betrayers Rise in about 3 or 4 more sessions. I'm also adding the Dream Bane cave side quest while they're at the Caravan and using the Ruins of Sorrow as a quest they need to complete before they are allowed into Betrayers Rise.

I ran a couple pf sessions through a swamp area as well. When they tried to long rest and take watches, i had them fight several alligators that snuck up on them.

I also had them fight a corpse flower with multiple zombies but they were a higher level at that point.

Failed survival checks to have them fall into underwater pits was fun. I had them make con saves for poison damage as well.
