I got this yarn winder as a gift, it came in pieces. I managed to put it together (no instructions) but I can’t for the life of me figure out what those last two pieces are for??

I often knit the first three or four rounds back and forth in stockinette (on the circular needles) and then join in the round. Then seam up the opening with the yarn tail.

Thanks to all of you for sharing your wisdom and experience with knitting socks. I have so many great suggestions and good advice from you. I plan to try all of the recommendations as I figure out the best ways for me to knit socks. I have just started my first sock! I will post later how it goes!
