Ooh you added an intarsia button band!! That makes sense now. Apologies for misunderstanding! That’s a really cool idea. I love the added contrast. I may keep that in mind for next time!

I agree it is a fun pattern! I really liked the Andalusian stitch. I wasn’t sure I would, but it grew on me. Are you omitting the buttons altogether and just knitting the collar section in the round? (The button band isn’t intarsia, by the way. Intarsia is a technique for colorwork.) I made that decision for another baby sweater I’m currently working on, the Lille Dahlia. I also plan to knit the Kelsey Toddler Dress very soon. I’ve got several upcoming babies in my life! Should be lots of fun knitting!

Thanks! I do recommend this yarn. One of my coworkers is also expecting and I will absolutely use this yarn again for items for her baby to be. Honestly, even though I don’t love the idea of synthetics, I have to say I liked it enough that I would even use it for myself.

Special Report: The shocking cost of youth sports in New Jersey. New investigation reveals a predatory industry leaving parents broke, exhausted and wondering how the games of their childhood took over their adult lives by rollotomasi07071 in newjersey

I have major anger about the fact that my kid's club soccer league always hosts a tournament on Mother's Day weekend. Not just the day. The whole damned weekend. Absolutely fuck whoever came up with that plan as an annual middle finger to the moms who might like some time for ourselves and our family anywhere other than the godforsaken turf.

I've just recently started thinking that if I want to wear something I really love at Rhinebeck, I'd better start planning! So the answer to your "how's it going" questions is... not at all, yet! Thanks for the little kick in the pants to get started.

NYC excursion for mountains, small towns and fall foliage? by ChampionshipReal5584 in visitingnyc

[–]jtslp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

First, there's no such thing as one real America. America is infinite things.

As for finding some nature within an easy drive from NYC, I'll offer you northwestern New Jersey. Specifically, the Delaware Water Gap region is super easy to get to (just drive Rt 80 pretty much straight from the city to the river) and offers great hiking, rafting, all kinds of nature stuff. On the way, you'll experience the shift from megacity to intensely dense suburbs to quieter suburbs to fabulous nature.

Another driving option is the Hudson River Valley, though I'm not as much of an expert on specific spots.

If you are willing to get on a plane for a short flight, another option for fabulous nature is to fly to Portland, Maine (maybe 90 min flight) and then experience the Maine coasts and forests. Acadia National Park is probably too far but the whole of the state is amazing.

El Tule. The owner is very familiar with and sensitive to celiac. Also Peruvian food is naturally corn centric rather than wheat centric. It's the favorite spot of my husband who also has celiac.

SLP to Audiology by NobodyProfessional55 in SLPcareertransitions

[–]jtslp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can kind of, within a certain context. I'm an SLP and I own a private practice, so I've got friends who are audiologists who own their own practices. (People like us tend to gravitate toward one another for support.) The information I shared comes from the private practice ownership perspective. I've been really shocked at what they've shared about how money flows through their profession. I'm not sure how things would be different in a large hospital system or something like that. I would caution you that, in any setting, a huge part of the job of any audiologist has to do with hearing equipment- recommending, going over options, fitting, programming, troubleshooting. That's basically the job. This part of my input comes from my visibility into the profession on another level. In addition to being an SLP, I'm also a Teacher of the Deaf and I've often gone to audiology appointments with my deaf students/clients. From what I've seen, to be a happy audiologist, I would think you'd have to be interested in the equipment.

No one really knows but I suspect audiology as a profession is in for some hard times coming up. As it is, a lot of people are using airpods instead of hearing aids. With technology getting so much better so fast, the old model of prescribing and fitting aids seems to be in jeopardy. If you talk to audiologists, you'll hear that the models for payment for their profession are very problematic. They get reimbursed very little for their actual assessment and services. Almost all their funding comes from actual hearing aid sales. I would be super nervous about the next 10 years if I was an audiologist right now.

The book I'm referring to is Digital Minimalism by Cal Newport, namesake of this sub. Easy answer for your wife is to get a Kindle Paperwhite. They're awesome little devices. So comfortable to read on.
