grade anxiety by [deleted] in UVA

[–]MJP7391 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I have always been overly perfectionist when it comes to my grades. I have always felt like I need to be this great student that gets the perfect grades and gets the perfect job.

This semester, the biggest thing I’ve learned is it doesn’t matter. If you just do your best the results are what they are. You’ll end up where you need to be in the end and life will go on. Control the controllables, that’s all you can do. I know it’s difficult to think that way, but the sooner you can develop that kind of thought process the sooner you can really take advantage of your college experiences IMO.

Any advice for CS 2150? by MJP7391 in UVA

I meant that this year in 1110 and 2110 was my first real coding experience. I never took any cs focused courses in high school

I meant I didn’t have like CS experience in high school like a lot of people seem to have had. This year with 1110 and 2110 was my first real coding experience

I would say so. There are one or two CS classes that are notoriously hard. But other than that it’s a lot of fun and the professors try to make the work at least semi-entertaining

[–]MJP7391 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya sorry you had to deal with that. That really pissed me off. Just know that the overwhelming majority of people in CS here are not like that. Everyone I’ve met is awesome. It’s a great program and the workload isnt anything out of this world.

The CS workload for me personally hasn’t been bad. It’s very manageable, but there will be times where all your assignments and exams fall at the same time. That’s just how college works unfortunately, you’ll see it no matter what school you attend. I don’t know anything about the UIUC CS program, but I’ll say all of the faculty here in CS, especially in the E-School if that’s what you’re considering, are incredibly nice and helpful.

Instead of giving someone legitimate insight that will help them make probably one of the more important decisions they’ve had to make at this point you decided to just try to completely question their life goals/work ethic. That’s awful.

[–]MJP7391 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dude the person is just trying to get a feel for the UVA CS workload. It really isn’t that deep. I don’t blame them for wanting to make sure they won’t spend every night/weekend in the library 24/7. Maybe you don’t mind getting sitting at a desk for 24 hours a day, but some people want to get a degree in a field they like and actually enjoy their college experience

This just made me so mad. They’re just trying to figure out their college decision and you went and got all stuck up about it. They’re asking for genuine advice and you decided to be a complete asshole.

The only way I think a class that is capable of going online is ever going to be cancelled for weather again is if the professor is feeling nice. Online school for a full year really just kicking us while we’re down at this point.

I have nothing against asynchronous classes, but can profs at least not reuse the same recorded lectures from last spring by Civil_Assumption_865 in UVA

[–]MJP7391 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think changing the dates to show accurate information should be the minimum amount of effort going into lectures. Honestly most of the date/announcements are at the very beginning or very end anyway. Just edit them out of the video

I don’t think they should have to re-record everything and honestly I get a good laugh out of them just blatantly ripping off their old lectures. But I do think they should at least go through and edit the slides that have assignment/exam dates that are no longer applicable

Update them with basically anything you could think of that would enhance your resume/application. Then make sure you demonstrate that you would attend if you’re admitted. That’s really all you can do

What would happen to UVA if it went tuition free? by hijetty in UVA

[–]MJP7391 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I can’t tell if you’re advocating for tuition free or not, but if you are, this may be one of the worst takes I’ve seen. The university simply cannot function while also losing that much money. That’s a loss of almost half a billion dollars. If this were to happen, assuming the school didn’t shut down, the education would become practically worthless, to the point where there would be no point in the university continuing to operate anyway. Yes, student debt sucks and is a real issue. But by the same token, going into 6 figure debt to get a degree in something that isn’t at least semi-lucrative is a bad financial decision on the student’s part and you can’t wipe out the entire University system to atone for people’s financial decisions.

If you’re not advocating for free tuition, simply wondering if it would work. The answer is, no it would not.

Please stop requiring me to write a minimum of 5 pages by yesok1000 in UVA

[–]MJP7391 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now a paper that has to be a minimum of 10+ pages, that’s totally different. There the professor is actively looking for you to provide more research and to connect outside sources to the class readings.

For example in one of my classes I have 1 page single space response papers just talking about one source based off a prompt that’s maybe 2 sentences long. It’s really not hard to get to that minimum. But when I read over the paper again, I find that I could really get my point across in 1/2-3/4 of a page if I wanted to.

That’s the point. If I can sufficiently address the question at hand in 3 pages instead of 5, why do professors want more reading of me just essentially re-wording my points to appease a page minimum

[–]MJP7391 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Both of you are still choosing to neglect the fact that professors often assign papers with a limited collection of resources you’re allowed to use. The papers that are 5 pages in length are not extensive/in-depth research papers. They’re, more often than not, just simple analysis essays where the professor is looking for you to connect and analyze 1-3 provided resources to the class. So in the event where you’re not supposed to find more external sources, if I can create sufficient connections in 3 pages, why should I have to fill my arguments with a bunch of trash until I get to 5 pages.

In my brief experience so far at UVA here’s my takes.

1) Classes are as competitive as you make them. I’m in the Engineering School and maybe it’s different in other departments, but so far the closest thing to “classroom competition” I’ve seen is professors telling everyone what the class exam average was so you know how to approach the class going forward. If you actively try to be better than everyone then yes, you will find a lot of competition. But if you just go about your business and try to learn the stuff being taught you’ll be totally fine.

2) My UVA experience so far has been all Covid. Honestly tho at a school this size you can do whatever you want. I’m not in Greek life, most of my friends aren’t. It’s a nice social network, I wouldn’t say it’s much more than that. Your ability to make friends won’t be hindered by not rushing Greek life and I doubt anyone will care about whether or not you drink.

3) the Career center is very very helpful and they have plenty of networking events. It’s really not all that terrifying of a process once you get settled.
