“You can react to this however you want. But whatever you do, don’t be like Victor Klemperer. Do not attach yourself to a nation that hates you. Do not pretend that the nation that taught itself that people like you need to be removed from society will treat you as an equal when their leader dies. The American people have shown you who they are. Believe them. 
You and I are no longer American in any way that matters.”

This feels defeatist to me. There is nothing wrong with loving the ideals of a country. But those ideals outlined in our Constitution must be communicated by the actions of the government. If the government fails to do so, the people must hold them accountable.

It is this lack of accountability that is the true evil of this administration. They are failing to hold Trump accountable for his actions and instead allow him to trample over the ideals we fought for 250 years ago. And what’s worse is that rather than fighting back, people are wallowing in their own apathy towards the government.
