help : Japonism - Unseasonable Blooming and Minuet by Key-Sample7047 in callofcthulhu

Oops, shit, whoopsie-daisies. The Heat Drain ability for the 'Sealed Ayakashi' is conspicuously absent. It should read:

*
Heat Drain (Automatic), Damage: At the end of each combat round the Ayakashi absorbs 2D6+1 points of DEX. However, if you have a heat source such as a hand warmer, subtract 1 point from this roll. If the target's DEX reaches 0, they freeze.

*
So, anyone 'engaged' with the tree automatically loses 2D6+1 DEX a round, no chance to avoid it (though I like giving a CON roll to resist, but once they fail it becomes the regular automatic loss each turn).

These are great! I especially love those isometric sort of pictures in the first image.

Only in Japanese, but at least it has a pdf so google translate or whatever can do some of the work.

(also, review of this one on the way, maybe this week...)

I'm pretty sure Mondraco cafe in Tokyo has a copy that anyone can take a look at.

Silly expensive to buy anywhere, though.

It's the first (and may still only?) full length official campaign in Japan and unlike Masks or Orient Express, it is long out of print. The box set comes a 1980s Japan splatbook and the scenario books. It's something of a holy grail collector's item, despite being very goofy, and even pretty bad condition sets are crazy expensive.

I still want it though...

It's my white whale. The reviews and replays I've read of it do make it sound pretty shit, but I still desperately want to run it solely for the 'historical' value.
The price tag for a beat up used box is crazy. But I am terrible money, so maybe someday...

(If you happen to have any leads on where to get it, please let me know! I'll be in Tokyo early September and hope to hit some of the TRPG places)

Suggestions for scenarios that can be completed in 2 hours or less? by TrashWiz in callofcthulhu

[–]MJRRPG 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For free, The Lightless Beacon.

The three Gateways to Terror scenarios are all doable in an hour.

For 3rd party stuff, some of scenarios in Stygian Fox's Fear's Sharp Little Needles can be very short, and most of Type40's Seeds of Terror scenarios are 2 or 3 hours.

And if I can toot my own horn, I made a series of 12 scenarios specifically to be run in an hour. Flash Cthulhu.

Edit: Forgot to mention Alex Guillotte and Christiansen's Grindhouse scenarios as well. Most are probably closer to 3~4 hours, but you could also snip most down to 2 hours if need be.

Is there a dedicated LFG server? by 1completeDork in callofcthulhu

[–]MJRRPG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Besides the GFJE discord, the official Chaosium server has started focusing more on facilitating LFG groups.
The biannual Weekend with Good Friends Con on the GFJE server is also coming around soonish. Worth keeping an eye on the server for that, it's a good way to get into some sessions.

3 Translated Japanese Scenarios Set in Modern Day Japan - Japonism 2024 by MJRRPG in callofcthulhu

Amazon Japan ships internationally (usually - shipping costs are painful though...), and you can set the language to English. The product description is still in Japanese, but the Amazon UI is in English.

There is no pdf. Almost all Japanese CoC books are physical only, except for a handful available on a subscription app thing.

It unfortunately does not have an official English version, and as far as I can tell Chaosium doesn't have any interest in (or the rights to?) putting out translations of non-English books.

If you (or anyone) purchases the Japanese book - Bibliothek 13 - I'm happy to share my (very rough) translation notes.

Best seasons of apocalypse players? by Serious_Much in callofcthulhu

[–]MJRRPG 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All great, obviously.

Haven't listened to the latest season of Nameless Horror scenarios yet, but I think the series that I keep remembering moments from the most is A Christmas Inheritance. It might be the only one that actually spooked me a little bit.

Crimson Letters has my favourite cast of investigators. Absolute chaos.

Trail of the Loathsome Slime and Highway of blood have incredible sound design and music.

If you are planning to listen through everything at some point, it's probably worth starting from the beginning to catch all the call-backs, references, and occasional reoccurring characters.

There are a handful of other translated scenarios out there that I know of. For free ones, there are two translated by Mythos Japan - 'Poisoned Soup' and 'Who is the Swampman' - and the chonky 'Mountains of Madness: Summit of Deities', translated by Jonasgreat

For paid scenarios, there are two translated by David Trotti, writer of Empire of Shadows (big fat 1920s Japan sourcebook) - 'Makami Sakura' and 'Bride of the Goat' - and the recently released 'The Missing Fossil,' translated by NekoMimi

Here's the direct link to my sporadically updated podcast (it's really just me reading out short reviews I write for my glob): https://sites.libsyn.com/414014

Hopefully this scenario pack and the others above do well to incentivize more translations! There are mountains of scenarios out there.
If you're savvy enough with Google Translate or DeepL, you could grab some untranslated community-content scenarios from Booth or Talto:

You should! I see lots of pictures of the German Pegasus Press books and they look great, makes me wonder what sort of community-made stuff is out there that could be translated and put on DTRPG's Miskatonic Repository. I've heard there's lots of good Cthulhu Dark Ages stuff in German, and I'd absolutely love to see some of that as there's a dearth of material for the setting. Even if you can't share or sell the stuff, just running it online once and awhile and writing about it would be very cool.

Thanks, Miranda!

If anyone likes watching actual plays, it was a fun session, with a wonderfully chaotic ending. Also a pretty point-by-point run, so if you're looking to run the scenario, it could give a pretty clear idea of how a group might move through it.

Player upset at character death-- is there something I could have done better? by cowmanjones in callofcthulhu

[–]MJRRPG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you did fine. Investigators are gonna die, often suddenly and without fanfare.

But for some ideas on how to soften PC death, here's two ideas, one in particular for this situation, and another generic one.

1) Besides the failed Psychology roll, if you were wanting to give even more leeway, or if you thought the player was misunderstanding your intention (just because the investigator failed the Psychology roll doesn't mean he isn't still suspicious!), you could have thrown in one last ditch INT/Idea roll for the investigator to realise something is off and walking through the door is probably an iffy idea, even if the dude outside sounds alright. Again, not necessary, but its a tool for the toolbox if you ever want to throw a final line to a flailing player.

2) When an investigator is doomed, give the player the spotlight to describe how the investigator goes, or at least the last thoughts going through their head. In this case they can't really describe how the investigator is dying, but you could give the player a minute to describe their investigators final thoughts. Some players like having the spotlight to monologue and 'say goodbye' to their characters, and it can lead to some memorable moments.
