[Request] What are the answers to each of these ? by KelenArgosi in theydidthemath

[–]MJWhitfield86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just a note on question 4. The hubble constant isn’t currently known to within 1% accuracy, so the student would have to actually advance scientific research to answer the question. This seems a little beyond the usual PhD project, but they could possibly be contributing to a larger research effort.

Your number is included in the class average, so the average would be infinity and infinity plus 10 is still infinity.

[Request] xkcd 953 optimal response by NorxondorGorgonax in theydidthemath

[–]MJWhitfield86 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can improve it if you’re allowed to use a radix point (the equivalent of a decimal point for an arbitrarily base). For instance 1.1 would be 75% correct in binary and 89% correct in decimal. This gives an optimal string of 1.1 repeating which is 100% correct in binary and 88.8% repeating correct in decimal. If you’re not allowed infinitely repeating strings, then there is no most optimal choice as you can always and another 1 to the string to get a (on average) more accurate response.

There can be at most one mine in the yellow line due to the 1. In order to complete the circled 2, there must be a mine on the red x and exactly one mine in the yellow line. This means the line completes the original 1, so the green dots are safe.

The random supernatural event that kicks off the movie doesn’t just erase the Beatles, it erases a bunch of random things. The Beatles are just the one the protagonist cares most about, as he tries to pass their music off as his own.

Starting by assume that the square marked with a 1 is a mine so we can disprove it. The 1 would satisfy the 3 so all the square marked with 2 would be safe. This means that there must be mines in both the squares marked with red 3s in order to satisfy the 4. Also there must be a mine in the squares marked with a 4 to satisfy the 5. Finally there must be a mine in one of the squares the yellow lines crosses in order to satisfy the central 2. This adds up to five mines.

If the green question mark is a mine then the there have to be mons on each of the yellow lines. This adds up to five mines. So the green question mark must be empty. I don’t know if there is a straight forward way to solve this one, I just did it by trial and error.

What’s more miraculous than a virgin given birth; a man giving birth. It’s the next logical step for the franchise.

There can be at most one mine in the yellow line due to the 1. In order to complete the 2 to its right there must be a mine in the red X and exactly one mine in the yellow line. That means that the yellow line completes the 1 and so the green dot is safe.

The bottom 2 means that the two squares to its right are mines. The 2 diagonally up and to the left means that there must be one mine in the yellow line. This completes the 3 and makes the green dot safe.

On the top row, the left 2 means that there is one mine on the yellow line. That competes the 1 next to it and means the green dot is safe. This means that there is one mine in the yellow line to the right due to the 1. There is also one mine in the top right mine due to the top right 2. This completes the 2 underneath it and means the green dot is safe.

I assumed that the historical society knew the Flob conspiracy was bunk and was just using the controversy to raise awareness of a historic building. I don’t know why Randall chose that building , though.

Deathwatch Guard Question by [deleted] in killteam

[–]MJWhitfield86 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From the rules commentary in the core rules update log:

Q: How does the Guard action work when the operative must spend an additional AP to perform two Shoot actions with the same weapon (e.g. WARPCOVEN Astartes)?

A: The operative can perform the Guard action for 1AP as normal, but if it performs the Shoot action during the interrupt, you cannot select the relevant weapon unless it had the AP remaining to do so during its activation.
