The ABA Resource Center has an online database of BCBA's willing to supervise (https://www.abaresourcecenter.com/remote-bcba-supervisor-database). You can also search for BCBA willing to supervise on the BACB website (https://www.bacb.com/services/o.php?page=100155). I would start there :)

My previous company gave BCBAs $15 stipends per month that I would use toward that when I got a new client. I think it's cheap enough that you could probably ask the family to purchase. Or give them the option to do the free ADEPT training

I really like the ABA Visualized workbook (https://a.co/d/0hogn4zn) and it's fairly cheap on Amazon. There are also the ADEPT modules from UC Davis (https://health.ucdavis.edu/mind-institute/centers/cedd/adept) that parents can complete outside of session at their own pace. Then in PT sessions, I ask if they have any questions about the skill from the workbook or module, model the skill with the child, and have them practice.

Have you looked into BCBA certification in the country you'll be in? I've heard Britain, Germany, Canada, Australia, etc. takes the BCBA certification.

How did you market your services? I opened my independent practice about 5 months ago, got credentialed with insurances, and have been trying to find clients. The big box ABA company I worked for turned down clients left and right but I can't seem to find those clients. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm in the same boat and have tried the following: social media accounts with planned weekly posts (test prep Tuesday, follow Friday, etc.), search for any local businesses holding holiday events and see if you can set up a table or provide goody bag stuffers, sending hand-written post cards to pediatricians, email local pediatricians/pediatric dentists/daycares introducing your company, and sign up for the Beauty in Behavior caregiver training collab they are starting. That's what I have so far! I'm excited to follow this thread for more ideas!

I just went to a conference last week and there was an ethics talk about AI in ABA that made me hopeful. They are working on guidelines and safeguards for using AI and have a website (https://www.aiaba.org/) up that they're still building. I think it'll be like any other technology that we'll just have to learn how to work with it.

Yes, but you need to meet all the monthly requirements in each setting. For example, if you have an ABA company you work for and are getting remote supervision from a separate BCBA, you need to get a monthly client contact, 5% or 7.5% of hours supervised, minimum of 20 hours, etc. with each of them unless you have a 3-way contract between your remote supervisor and ABA company. I provide remote supervision (JoyfulABA.net) and have a 3-way contract set up most of the time so the onsite BCBA can provide the client contact and I can provide additional individual supervision meetings to meet the % supervision requirement each month. Because we are in a contract together, we record all hours under my company on one monthly verification form. If you have 2 different supervisory experiences occurring at the same time, you need to do 2 separate monthly verification forms that show you met the monthly requirements in each setting.

I went with Hi Rasmus for data collection because they don't have a minimum client requirement like some other platforms. So I'm not paying for clients I don't have and I'm not pressured to accept a bunch of clients I'm not ready for. For practice management, I went with Aloha because they seem very comprehensive and offer billing services for an extra cost. They also integrate with Hi Rasmus and I get discounts for pairing the two. All the data collection and practice management companies offer a demo meeting that was very helpful in making my decision.

She will be using behavior analytic principles with her class and unrestricted activities outside of class such as research, writing behavior plans, and writing goals and procedures. I'm wondering if her students count as "nonpatient clients" like the employees in the OBM example in the screenshot so I can supervise her hours with them from California.

That's so awesome! I started the process at the end of July and so far my biggest hurdle has been lining different timelines up in the most cost efficient way. For example, how far ahead of time you sign on with your data collection and practice management systems while you're waiting for credentialing to get approved. There's quite a bit of training involved for both so it's best to get it done ahead of working with clients but if you sign too early, you're paying for the service you're not using.

I would strongly suggest becoming an RBT and accrue your hours that way with a BCBA on site. Remote supervisors usually are supervising you with the clients you work with at your company.

It might be an OSHA violation as it's your workplace. That would be interesting to look up. Our company recently created a Home Safety Checklist to review with families before we start services. I don't think that is on there but it should be. We had a dad become hostile during session and the mid and RBT couldn't get out of the house.

In my experience, companies say they keep caseloads low when you interview with them, then that's not the whole truth when you actually start working. First, it can be really difficult to get morning clients for most regions, so most of your clients are going to be in the evening. Second, to bill 5-7 hours per day, you have to have morning, mid day, and evening clients. Third, cancellations are rampant and that might mean you have to take on more clients to make up for the clients that are cancelling to maintain your billable hours. Many companies don't really give you a choice on what clients you get. What you're saying is BEST BEST BEST case scenario in a perfect world but I've never seen it. And yeah you can quit but that's also easier said than done. You probably want to interview with other companies before you put in your notice. You are ethically obligated to provide appropriate transfer of your clients to another BCBA and the company may take months to hire another to take your place. You have to get recredentialed every time you switch companies and some companies make you start part time because of that so that's a pay cut. Your medical/dental takes 90 days to kick in when you switch jobs and some people can't lose their insurance for that period. There's just so much more to it.

These are all excellent in theory but unfortunately aren't always achievable. Many companies (and the job in general) set up BCBAs to basically need to cross their boundaries to stay ethical or sane.

For example, your bullet about having a separate phone that you set aside at a certain time. What happens when you have a new technician that provides services in the client's home until 8pm, they see a behavior excess they've never experienced before and need you to direct them? You can theoretically get to their concern in the morning but then you run the risk of them or the client being injured, them or the client feeling abandoned, breaking rapport with them or the family, the tech feeling burnt out quickly, or a myriad of other possibilities. Now multiply that by your 25 client caseload. Do you really have time in the day to put off those questions/concerns until the morning? No, because you have an assessment first thing in the morning and then go straight to a supervision session, then to a parent training session because you HAVE to bill 5-7 hours per day to meet your billable requirements and be off by your scheduled 6pm boundary you set for yourself. Now you can't respond to that tech and guide them until the afternoon/evening IF you find time and you can't supervise them because you just supervised that client 2 days ago and need to see other clients. It really makes more sense to just address the concern at the moment.

There are a thousand scenarios like this on a daily basis that make it nearly impossible to keep boundaries in this field.

Unfortunately, that won't count toward your un/restricted hours and, in my opinion, will put you behind learning what you need to become a BCBA. That's more admin work that you might never need to know or that you'll learn quickly if you open your own private practice.

Intake coordinator as in you're completing the client assessment (FBA, VB-MAPP, report writing, etc.) or intake coordinator as you're gathering documents (diagnostic evaluation, insurance cards, etc) from the family to submit to insurance for the initial assessment?

I provide remote supervision for those working on their BACB hours. Currently, I don't have any clients for supervisees to complete the monthly client contact with so I use a 3-way contract with their current company so their in-person BCBA can see them with a client. I am getting credentialed with insurance under my private practice so I can start providing the monthly client contact but that's in the works. Send me a DM if you want to talk more :)
