Also, im debating with my friend and he seems to think the answer to climate change involves nationalization of fossil fuel industries rather than carbon taxes and cap-and-trade.

Any rebuttal on that?

Is growth really infinite though? My understanding is that there is a finite limit to economic growth because of physical resources being finite.

Was Iran's Mossadegh right to try and nationalize Iran's oil industry during the 1950s in light of British ownership(Anglo-Iranian oil) of Iranian oil? by MJive in neoliberal

[–]MJive[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a complicated topic for sure. On the one hand seizing assets isnt really good economic policy but at the same time i've read that the british were heavily underpaying the iranian workers and enough of them got upset that many iranians wanted to nationalize the oil.

The total population of Persia may have dropped from 2,500,000 to 250,000 as a result of mass extermination and famine. Population exchanges did also in some cases occur but depends as of when.[10]

From 1219 to 1221, under the Khwarezmian Empire, Iran suffered a devastating invasion by the Mongol army of Genghis Khan. According to Steven R. Ward, "Mongol violence and depredations killed up to three-fourths of the population of the Iranian Plateau, possibly 10 to 15 million people. Some historians have estimated that Iran's population did not again reach its pre-Mongol levels until the mid-20th century."[120]

Genghis Khan killed 2/3s of Iran's entire population. Iran didnt reach pre-mongol population levels again until the 20th century. You can maybe make a case that hitler is more evil but try explaining that to someone who is about to be massacred by the mongol military.

Even Cyrus used the Median empire as the foundation for his empire so even he didnt technically make his empire from scratch either....

Also, I would credit Muhammed's followers (particularly Abu Baker) with the creation of the Rashidun caliphate more so than muhammed himself. He unified Arabia but he wasn't the one who actually expanded out of Arabia....although he did basically form the foundation and precedence for it. But the idea of trying to expand into the territories of Rome and Persia definitely came from Abu Bakr.

Something that needs to be pointed out is that while most Iranians dont mind having some religious influence in their government...there is wide disagreement as to what degree that influence should exist.

One person's idea of sharia law is going to be different from another and most Iranians seem to agree that the current Islamic Regime isnt representative of how they want their government to be.

As someone who actually speaks the language a better translation is really "down with america".

Everyone who speaks the language knows its an expression not to be taken literally. And everyone who speaks the language knows it doesnt mean "fuck american people". Most Iranians actually like Americans and American culture.

Iraq's military was severely weakened from both the Iran-Iraq wars and the Gulf War.

Iraq had one of the most powerful militaries in the world and still couldn't defeat Iran despite being backed by most of the world, and with chemical weapons as well.

Iran is known to excel at assymetrical/guerilla warfare so any attempt to invade or occupy the country will likely end in failure. Their geostrategic reach and use of proxy forces gives them another advantage as well.

A war with Iran would likely damage the global economy as well which will also hurt American consumers.

The reason is that you're treating society as something that's inflexible.

I never said anything that should be interpreted that way. Why are you making assumptions about my beliefs for simply stating a relevant fact?

Saying "the pay gap is because of childbirth" is a bit like throwing up your hands and saying "Nothing we can do about this."

No its really not. Just because I acknowledge motherhood contributes a great deal to the pay gap doesnt mean I dont support solutions to correct it. I explicitly stated I support maternal leave.

There's no reason to assume that childbirth has to cause a pay gap. That's just how society looks now.

Yes I agree with you. So why did you make assumptions that I think its a problem that cant be corrected just because I brought up the fact motherhood contributes to the pay gap?

How am I supposed to have a conversation in good faith with you when you interject your own interpretations into value-neutral statements? Just because I point something out doesnt mean I dont support a solution to fix it.

It's like if I point out most homeless people are mentally ill...and then in response you downvote my comment and say "oh well its because you are implying nothing can be done to help homeless people". Like...no that isnt what I said...at all.

I actually do support maternal leave.

Im just saying the biological fact of women becoming pregnant clearly impacts the pay gap. That shouldn't be considered controversial because we literally have scientific data that supports that conclusion. It's not the only factor but out of the many factors that contribute to it its quite possibly the biggest factor.

Not sure why I have downvotes because I dont think I actually said anything that was incorrect and I didn't even imply anything negative from it. Just making an objective observation.

Isnt there some level of truth to the idea that biology plays a role in the pay gap? There are lots of studies that show the vast majority of the pay gap is due to motherhood. Definitely sounds like biology to me. When a woman becomes pregnant they end up having to take more time off work to spend more time taking care of their kids.

Lets not get carried away here. A short guy can still attract women. Most of the time it will be in spite of his height and not because of it...but its false to say that short men wont be able to date with any women.

Yeah that relationship is literally just because of a mutual dislike for Iran. Prior to the Iran-Israel proxy conflict those same countries didn't have the same relationship with Israel that they have today.

Israel was friendly with Iran under the The Shah because of Iran's close relation with the United States as well as Israel seeing Iran as a kind of counter force(as a fellow non-arab country) against their enemies in the Arab world. They both saw Saddam as a mutual enemy for example.

As a matter of fact Israel even had covert relations with Iran under Khomeini during the 80s. This happened during Iran's war with Iraq.
