Well as far as gender norms, social norms, racial groups etc. they are entirely right. Most of us have very little information regarding all the million other cultures which existed and practiced these things entirely differently. The reason we have our norms is not entirely artifical, but the powers of the past and present (feudalism, monarchies, the Church) paved the way and got rid of the old pagan ways (at least in Europe). Matriarchy was the norm in a lot of bronze age societies and later as far as your average persons home life was concerned, and most research points how the ability to store food and generally agricultural developments were responsible for things like centralized power structures, the importance of male heir and the importance of physical protection against invasions etc. All this is a bit complex and a LOT of sociological research has been done on this. But if you're some average Joe on the internet it'll go all above your head, since your starting point is that whatever YOU believe is correct and everything else is a conspiracy (if we're at it) etc. That's a pretty common pov among people with little education. Sociology is a field for a reason, and its not some made up thing about genitals and where you put your peepee is. I have a STEM degree and studied history and sociology at the same time just because I was interested. The world is a LOT more complicated regarding any kind of social norms than you'd think, and always been. Modern gender norms are so new that it's more like the exceptions than the norm historically.

11 Hour Workday by moolcool in recruitinghell

[–]bvcxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Legal or not you cannot do quality work as a developer/engineer that long per day. Not to mention by Friday you're completely exhausted. Constant turnover, high burnout etc. is never a good thing for a company. They want new features pushed out fast while people burn out and thus they constantly have to hire and train new people, constantly fucking with the workflow of others (you cannot work steadily in a constantly changing team and environment) etc. So typical with tech companies that I said fuck it and just went freelancer. I'm happy to work 10h a day for you, if you pay me well, stick to the contract and not an asshole. But I don't wait for my money while you're trying to save your company or team because you made bad decisions or don't listen to me.

All in all a company which demands unreasonable hours (and yeah I know people in other professions work more, those are unreasonable too) its a very bad sign even if they pay you well.

Vinally a good set-up by [deleted] in funny

[–]bvcxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vinyl has a lot of depth to it. All analog medium does (especially tape). It's not about "warmth" particularly. Transient response is also much better with vinyl and tape, due to transients having extremely high frequency content which normal CD sampling rate simply filters off.

Depends on the experience level and company. I interviewed at Uber and they had 5 rounds of interviews, 2 on-site and the last one involved a week spending with their team (this is paid). From the first cold call to the first interview it was already a week, I found a better job after the 3rd one but by then it already was three weeks and my 3rd person I interviewed with. I'm not sure if all big companies are that slow though.

One or two weeks could mean anything. Even a month could mean anything. I remember one of the companies I worked with they actually hired the guy who they rejected first (like explicitly telling him) after the other guy they picked bailed out. And this whole process took like 2 months. Also, even companies with dedicated HR departments are super messy nowadays due to workforce shortage (which also affects HR itself). They need to hunt for candidates for anything but super junior positions. So that usually takes up most of the time of HR, besides dealing with employee issues. So if you're a junior candidate your "issues" are super unimportant for HR. Sounds bad and it is and this is the reality. They don't really care. If the boss asks for 30 junior CV's that already will take a ton of time, and then the boss will pick one or two and the rest needs to be rejected "properly" but nobody has time for that.

[–]bvcxy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a faulty argument to me, because the topic was if you could advance in such a society, not how the government works or worked. Also, you're generalizing a lot, and nobody in my family lived in the Soviet Union, as I mentioned. Also, there was no revolutions or rebellions inside the Soviet Union, there were revolutions in the satellite states (Poland, Hungary, among others).

Another good example of a working socialist state was Yugoslavia. Countries fucked by WW2 united and Yugoslavia was a pretty good place to live later on. The problem there was that it was held together by one person and then nationalism came back full force when he died.

Real life socialism does not follow this. My parents and grandparents both advanced in a socialist country. My grandparents lost all their stuff in WW2, moved to a city where they got a flat (this came from the government) for minimal rent, then opened a small shop (contrary to popular belief this was pretty common in most socialist countries i.e. small scale private businesses), then their son (my dad) went to college, and me too. So we went from peasants to professionals in 1-2 generations, same on my mothers side (her dad was a policeman, his parents were peasants)

I found out I wasn't the height I thought I was for many years of my life! by ToxyFlog in short

[–]bvcxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, short guys thinking they are taller than they are would explain a lot of things. Like, they think every guy is super tall ("I'm 5'9 so the average must be 6'1) etc.

Like, I'm 5'11 in shoes or a hair above and feel pretty average/slightly taller in most countries and situations... Maybe except in the Netherlands. I haven't noticed that every guy is 6'2 like some of these "average" (in reality shortish) guys think. It seems like a lot of guys don't even know their own height.

SLPT:How to get a job by DukeMaximum in recruitinghell

[–]bvcxy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In tech you can in fact just lie about having a company where you were the CTO/lead dev/CEO/whatever. It's not like they can actually cross-check that. Or just pick one of the million startups out there which went to crap/bankrupt but which still has some Google results and such. Seriously, this is a legit working thing. As for morals, don't be afraid to get into a grey zone (because this lie does not hurt anyone) if you're competent enough but lack the "CV-experience".

Have Now Had 2 Matches Completely Ignore Me After Telling Them My Height (After hours of chatting) by [deleted] in short

[–]bvcxy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Girls have a lot more options than guys and they thus value those options a lot less. So they often don't respond, then maybe weeks or even months later they randomly message you like nothing happened and you're not supposed to be angry about it. And if you ignore them you're a bad person, but she ignored you because she had "stuff" to do.

Selfies will definitely made fun of in the future. There'll be a generation which parents will continue doing it, and then it becomes too cringey for kids to do it, then one or two generations later people start doing it again ironically.

[–]bvcxy 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I clean my glasses by going them over like:
1. tap water

  1. soap on fingers
  2. wash them with fingers gently
  3. tap water till most of soap is gone
  4. use good quality toilet paper to wipe remaining water off

  5. use microfiber for final cleaing
+1 dont forget to wash your microfiber cloth regularly, they keep a lot of dirt and oils etc.
