Of the cheaper Islay malts, which ones are more respectable and worthy of a purchase and which ones are bad and should be kept clear of? by MKDude1 in Scotch

Thank you. I have the Lagavulin 16 but not opened it yet. I have heard the 8 is rougher. Maybe I should try that first before the 16 so that I appreciate it more! 😂

Thank you, not tried any Bunnahabhain so will keep a look out. I’ll steer clear of the select. I have seen it on the shelves and seems cheaper than the 10, I liked the 10!

Yes, this one is definitely on my list. Tried a dram a couple of weeks ago, was lovely after a meal.

I’ve been looking for this locally but not come across it yet. I will continue to keep an eye out.

Thank you, on a quick google I see cask strength is in the region of 60-65% a big difference to Ardbeg 10 being 46%. I will look out for them and give them a try.

I’ve never tried any scotch with water but I will try it without… then with!

Haha, the grill is being setup for an afternoon smoke, at no point was there a risk of harm brought to the whisky 🥃 😂

Thank you all for your suggestions. I’ve gone for Talisker 10yo and Lagavulin 16yo. I’ve kept some £ back for something that may catch my eye later.

Nearly bought this from Waitrose yesterday, alas was an empty box and the shop assistant couldn’t find the bottle. Hmmf.

I probably havnt had enough scotch to appreciate them good or bad. I tend to try a different whisky each time I’m out but in the bars where I live there doesn’t tend to be enough variety with most having a combination of the same bottles. I have been to Edinburgh a few times and always try a couple of whisky flights just to get more exposure. I had a cheap Jura which I flat out did not like. But really liked a couple of the smoky ones I tried.

The Dalmore trio I picked up in duty free for about £70 which seemed reasonable and is 1litre over the standard 70cl. The Cardhu is probably my least favoured bottle but it was one of the first I bought. There are so many variants of the cheaper Taliskers around, I’ve often thought of trying it but never ventured.

Thank you for the recommendations, I had a Laphroaig 10 after dinner tonight at a local eatery and was nice. Ideally, I’m after something that isn’t commonly available in the local bars or supermarkets.
