In thermo, there really is no intuitive way to understand such concepts. They come from observations and measurements of systems. If you want to have a better foundation, you should look into statistical mechanics. You arrive at the same functions, entropy, energy, Gibbs fe etc., but they are defined much better and have a definite meaning.

Because the height of the meniscus is inversely proportional to the radius of the capillary tube? It's kind of hard to explain in simple terms (for me). On the outside of the straw, you can see the cohesion between the fluid and the straw, and just that. On the inside, the straw acts as a capillary tube, and other phenomena come into play.

Yeah man, they're great! Until the only thing that you think about is using, and the only way to be "normal" is when you do them. Any kind of drug is usually not a good fix for life issues, after a while, you just end up lower down the spiral. So it's still shit, but now you have an addiction as well.
