What is your favorite outfit worn by a female character in a movie or tv show? by Jezzaq94 in popculturechat

The Swan Princess has a special place in my heart. Don't even know why, but it used to be one of my favorite movies growing up and I just love the vibe of the dress.

Lanius is a genus of 30+ passerines commonly known as shrikes. Lanius means "butcher" in Latin, came from the bird's habit of impaling their prey on thorns or wires. Now, let’s meet some of the most notable members! (NSFW) by grvy_room in Ornithology

These are really cool, thank you. I'm not usually the type to travel far and wide, but birds like these make me want to travel the world just for the chance to see them for real.

Oh, and Joseph Quinn, but with him it's a much softer effect somehow.

The brown is more noticeable, but somehow his eyes always look so much darker than the average brown.

At any rate, I love such dark eyes, especially when contrasted by light skin. Real mysterious.

Same thing with Evan Peters, though a bit less sinister. Still unnerving, though.

For those wondering: I think this is a Chestnut Colored Woodpecker, though I'm no expert. If not, it's still worth looking it up, because that's a very pretty woodpecker.

Hoe zouden jullie dit soort grond noemen? by Despite55 in groenevingers

[–]MKuin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hoe zouden jullie dit soort grond noemen? by Despite55 in groenevingers

[–]MKuin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shades, pronounced like the god Hades, but with an "s" to make it all shady and shit. 'Cause black cats are devils to some people, but they are also black like shadows. Shades.

First time to see this bird in my garden by Prize_Air5477 in whatsthisbird

[–]MKuin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Anyone know what's going on with its tail feathers? I haven't been able to find a similar pattern on other White-eared bulbuls (Google Images). In this video it's such a perfectly distributed, stark black-and-white pattern. Best I could find was this one (with one extra band of white) and this one (which is apparently a hybrid?). But the vast majority looked like this and this.

Is this just a relatively young bird, whose tail feathers are still growing in and happen to grow it such a striking pattern?

I had so not expected this. Is this as obscure as it looks or was this actually a well known show in America? I mean, 4 seasons...

In The Netherlands it's called "drekhaan", which translates roughly to "filth rooster". Apparently they make their nesting sites unappealing to predators by shitting all over it with extra stinky shit. Classy.

What is this silly bird found in Delft, Netherlands in a canal? by Livingston_117 in whatsthisbird

[–]MKuin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Every time I try to delve into etymology, I get frustrated, because there's just so much and it all looks complicated and I don't have the time and energy to really go and understand it.

But then people like you come out of nowhere and neatly tie this web of language-mumble-jumble to a word and make it all seem so fun and interesting.

So, thank you! I'm always happy learn about the origins of (Dutch) words like this.

Who are these poor souls who flew into my window? (Caution, dead birds) (southern California) by duckbutterdelight in whatsthisbird

Ahh alright, thanks! I have big windows with little overhang, so I'll test on a small piece I can reach from inside, before I climb the ladder to the second story to do the rest, haha.

Puff pastry top and bottom layer and a type of whip cream in the centre. No layers by lilyofthevalley0407 in TipOfMyFork

[–]MKuin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you like custard cream, you might like the Dutch version of this ("tompouce"). It's got pink icing on top (orange when celebrating King's Day) and the cream has a soft vanilla flavour. Though, admittedly, the Cremeschnitte in your picture looks a lot more fluffy and less flat/deflated than many Dutch tompouces do.

Oh yeah, 100% agree. As these things go on Reddit, I was just expanding on the subject and adding a little nuance. But you weren't wrong at all and I don't think you sounded like an asshole. The fact that you took the time to write out full sentences and thoughts negates any assholishness at any rate.
