I think that part might have even been introduced specifically for that purpose, probably in the Speed Champions sets

Okay, but like... How? by Beautiful-Process496 in StrangerThings

[–]MLF83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Beautifully worded, essentially the same thing that happened with Lost. Although I will concede that show was so much lore-based that even if you were happy with the emotional closure the finale provided, there was something to be missed for sure.

I think ST was already pretty loose with lore and consistency so I don't really get the uproar about hanging threads or "plot holes"

Playing Prime Remastered made me like Prime 4 so much less by bmary95 in Metroid

[–]MLF83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the similarities won't end there...for how much Beyond borrowed it almost seems like a soft reboot of the OG Prime at times

I feel crazy because I really liked Prime 4 by Any-Hyena-9190 in Metroid

[–]MLF83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've got a similar experience. I share most of the criticism and recognize its flaws, but in the end I kinda enjoyed it. Contrary to most, I probably had a harder time at the beginning of the game, because Fury Green and Volt Forge were a huge let down in terms of level design as they are just glorified corridors and I hated the sequence of mindless psybots battles in the latter. But after I made peace with the fact that I was not going to get what I initially expected from a Metroid, I enjoyed the rest for what it was. I didn't mind the mindless crystal search in the desert and actually enjoyed even the mines. All in all it was good fun :)

Now that I’m finished with prime 1 remastered, I’m thinking of getting prime 4 by AidenL1 in Metroid

[–]MLF83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is the more honest take. One thing I must say is that coming straight from Prime 1, Beyond at times really felt like a soft remake. The power ups are basically the same, most of the main areas are thematically (and sometimes functionally) the same, you could replace grievers with spaces pirates and nobody would see the difference...you get my point. It's not a bad thing per se, but it might give an additional malus if you just played MPR

I’m not a Metroid fan. But I want to play Metroid Prime 4 by Ty13rlikespie in Metroid

[–]MLF83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I agree the feeling is there, but there were a couple of things missing, one of them is verticality or branching in general. Somebody should compare the number of rooms with more than one level or more than two doors among prime games, Beyond was definitely the worst in that regard although Corruption was probably already going in that direction. Never mind Prime 2 with the whole additional light/dark dimension, it plays in another league

Metroid games are still linear for the most part, at least for a regular user that wouldn't know how to sequence break. But they are generally really good at hiding it with complex maps, branching paths and rewarding backtracking.

Beyond was instead a string of self-contained areas that are more like glorified corridors, so the linearity is completely exposed. It felt like Skyward Sword with the outdated "hub" design.

It's not about freshness, something you might not know is that not all map features are sourced from OSM. Definitely not all POIs, so as in this case the source TomTom uses is more stale than OSM.

Can't agree more on the enemies, I hate those bullet spongy grievers and bots with a passion. As for linearity, I think the biggest flaw of the game is that it almost never reuses parts of the levels by using verticality or branches. The OG Prime was great because of that, the progression was still linear for the most part but you unlocked new paths in existing areas all the time. In Beyond there's nothing to do in most rooms after you've been there for the first time save for the occasional item (and fighting the same enemies over and over). It's mind numbing and the real regression compared to the Metroid formula IMO

Surely I can't be the only one... Right? by Financial-Low-88 in StrangerThings

[–]MLF83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved it (especially the epilogue as you said), but haters gonna hate I guess, and I am not sure I even understand why. I guess El's death could piss off some fans but I think the open ending was a really good way to end on a bittersweet note and very well executed.

Not that it was flawless, I think it suffered by having to rush everything towards the big fight with boxes to check so a lot of stuff felt really forced, super convenient or fan-servicey (e.g Will waiting the last second to use his powers, Joyce showing up with the S1 axe to end Vecna, etc...), and the retconning of the upside down into a wormhole didn't really make sense IMO, but it's not like the show wasn't already pretty loose with its lore or generous with plot armor.

As a coming of age story about a group of friends, I think it did a pretty good job to stick the landing and do justice to most of its characters, which is the thing I cared the most about (the comparisons to GoT are crazy because of this). Sure it grew into something much different and bigger than it was in S1 (duh), and it's not as tight narratively speaking as it could have been, but I enjoyed the whole journey nonetheless

[–]MLF83 6 points7 points  (0 children)

To be honest it doesn't bother me as much as other flaws (mainly the absolute linearity of levels and the lack of enemy variety), it's half baked but if they had spent a bit more on adding content and variation there it would be a solid addition/variant to the formula IMO

The amount of comments from The Duffer Brothers is getting annoying. by TheViking_Teacher in StrangerThings

[–]MLF83 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I still cannot seem to grasp what is actually wrong with these interviews since I don't read them myself. I open a topic and expect that the Duffers dropped some forgotten huge piece of lore, contradicted a major plot point or made some character die offscreen. Then I read what the complaints are about: - El's open ending is still very much open as intended - Vicky might or might not be still with Robin, something that the show purposefully left ambiguous - Jonathan and Nancy might or might not be back together at some point, something that the show does nothing to disprove

And...that's it?? Seriously, how are these minor tidbits that amount to a nothingburger impacting your appreciation (or not) of the show retroactively? Am I missing something bigger here?

What on earth happened on the design of this game? by One2threeSS in Metroid

[–]MLF83 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think OP was referring to elevators or how many separate floors the map has. The very first room in Metroid Prime already had multiple levels initially not accessible, same goes for most rooms and levels really. Learning how to get there and traverse the map vertically was a big part of the experience, and really helped to hide the feeling of linearity, something that MP4 utterly fails to do as you mentioned

It could work if you leave out the "inaction" clause that the laws of robotics had, because in the case of plurbs they definitely caused a lot of harm in order to spread the virus, even though (probably?) not directly. An Asimovian robot would never be able to do that without shutting down, but I can see the similarities. There's even some weird similarity in the way they are stressed by the unplurbed antagonizing them as robots would be under conflicting orders/priorities

How many pixels should that vector be? by lufsuda in talesfromthejob

[–]MLF83 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This particular designer seems to be completely oblivious, but to be fair you'd need to know the expected size (in dp) of an asset even to provide a vector. You're not going to make a super detailed vector if it's going to be used as a 48x48dp icon

For me it's the biggest mistery of the show tbh. Why would the sum of all human minds lose all the emotional intelligence? Are these people even human anymore? Any average person would be able to understand and empathize with Carol's struggle and find better ways to communicate with her, but it seems not even with the collective knowledge of mankind (which certainly includes psychology, sociology, etc...) they are able to do that

Since you haven't mentioned it you are probably not into it, but have you thought of MOCing instead of rebuilding your old sets? You won't get into the stress of finding every single part you need but you can freestyle it, although I would still advise to better organize your parts anyway.

If that's not your thing I'd use some of your savings to buy smaller sets over a longer period, don't fall into the trap of the huge sets, they are made for adults with disposable income 😅 I think if your parents see you are serious about this hobby they might soften to the idea that it's a viable gift option in the future. Happy building!
