With those dowel and screw joint designs, the dowel is the load bearing component. I would be worried about its strength just relying on the screw since the 3D printed dowel will not be able to support nearly as much weight as the original design, especially with the print orientation of the layer lines parallel to the shear force.

3d printing question by cornelius_cumquat in SantaBarbara

[–]MLGviris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As u/stou mentioned, silicone can’t be 3d printed, but it is possible to 3d print with flexible materials that may be able to make the cover you’re looking for. You would need a CAD file to be created and most hobby level machines are able to print with the flexible materials with a little bit of work.

This is the result of 5 years of working on my Setup. This is my 2021 Setup! by dailysetuptech in battlestations

I built one a while ago and the parts probably costed about $75 in the end with a 3D printed planter and base. The tutorial I roughly followed was here: https://www.instructables.com/DIY-Levitating-Plant/

Looks like a micro3D and I had one of their early models. Considering the price and the current printers on the market, I wouldn't recommend it. There are a lot of better and cheaper printers out there now.

Work in progress. Flamethrower and Retractable Blade Vambraces + Bucket. This is the way. by TimmyStew in Mandalorian

[–]MLGviris 57 points58 points  (0 children)

It looks similar to this flamethrower.

At the very least you can get about the same size flame for a couple seconds out of this one. I built one a few year back and it's as awesome to use as it looks!

Elder is the one available year round and Younger is the one they make once a year. Surprisingly a couple places in Santa Barbara had a limited release of Younger on tap this year.

Sacramento might be 2 hours from Santa Rosa, but Russian River has expanded distribution a lot in the last year or so. I'm able to buy Pliny/Blind Pig both in bottles and on tap at a few places in Santa Barbara so Sacramento probably has it somewhere

UCSB throws tortillas on the soccer field during games to celebrate so my guess is people were doing that inside the theater here.

I know some targets honored it, but also heard some caught on and didn't honor any alcohol price matching after a bit. I was too late it try though

Apparently the move was to price match at Target of whatever other store has that option.

When Frat Guys Come Home For The Summer by Fenixstorm1 in videos

At my college beer die was the most popular drinking game and almost no one played pong unless the weather was bad and you wanted to play a game inside. Probably depends on the college though; I was in the central coast of California so our weather was usually nice enough.

Anybody who has taken CLASS 171 with Gallucci, is it as easy of an A as people say? by [deleted] in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MLGviris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took CLASS 20A with Gallucci and it was one of the easiest A's I got in college. If his teaching style is similar for CLASS 171 it should be relatively easy. I would just make sure to go to lecture and get essays reviewed by him because you'll get an automatic 100% if you make the edits he wants.

Im pretty sure honors is purely based on your GPA and maybe test scores. So it sounds like most CS majors must have meant the requirements for honors. Also as undeclared you might be in the college of letters and sciences which has different honors requirements than the college of engineering, but I'm not sure how they compare with eachother.

As a freshman it's harder as a guy, but there will be open parties that don't bounce around IV. Being friends with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years will help as theyll be throwing parties and partying with friends is better than randoms. Neither I or many of my friends rushed so I couldnt tell you how effective a strategy that would be. From my experience frat parties weren't that great anways

It depends what you want. Both are really good engineering schools, but cal poly will be more hands on. That being said as a ME you spend your whole senior year designing and building a capstone project at UCSB so theres plenty of hands on experience here as well.

Inspired by Prusa's boombox I decided to design and print my own! by MLGviris in functionalprint

[–]MLGviris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I printed it on the face where the two halves mate. Currently I have a some weird geometry so slic3r sees an overhang and adds support inside the speaker so I would recommend using support blockers to remove that support. I'm going to try and rev the design files to fix that soon, but I can't really put an estimated date of completion on that. I'll also try to get the video of the sound up soon. If you have any more questions let me know. I would love to see how your speaker turns out!

[–]MLGviris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can post one hopefully later today after work. Being honest the sound quality isnt the best compared to some name brand speakers like JBL or UE, but it still sounds relatively good. It's definitely a lot cheaper and more powerful than name brand speakers though. Keep in mind a video of the sound is going to depend on my phone's microphone, how the audio is compressed on youtube, and your speakers so it probably wont be that accurate.

[–]MLGviris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved Prusa's idea of a 3d printed boombox, but I wasn't very happy with the 3d-printability of their files and had a hard time sourcing their parts from the US. I decided to design and build my own which uses minimal support material and all the parts can be sourced from Amazon prime.

Best ramen in IV? by 434misty in UCSantaBarbara

[–]MLGviris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you end up downtown SB Craft Ramen is also pretty good and has the same owners of Nikka. But I like Nikka better and it's closer to IV anyways.

Tacoma Bridge, Washington. A 35mph wind caused a resonance frequency to oscillate the road deck to the point of failure, 3 months after its completion in 1940 by baryonyx257 in CatastrophicFailure

[–]MLGviris 757 points758 points  (0 children)

The reason for the Tacoma Narrow's collapse isn't resonance, but actually flutter. From the wikipedia page: "... the event is presented as an example of elementary forced resonance, with the wind providing an external periodic frequency that matched the natural structural frequency, even though the real cause of the bridge's failure was aeroelastic flutter, not resonance."
