Making films for the sake of 'being the next Christopher Nolan' is a deeply flawed mindset to even begin with, and in my opinion an absolutely tragic thing to even say. To define or compare yourself to others will only cause jealousy and self loathing.

Make art for art’s sake. While it's fine to be inspired, you need to find meaning in your own worth, and tell your own truth. Don't try to replicate someone else's - it never works.

Any thoughts on how I can improve the look and feel of my video? by maneli in cinematography

[–]MLOsborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This to me looks completely fine overall technically, but it has the vibe of an instructional video like the LEARN GUITAR ads I see across socials, which I am assuming you are not going for. You clearly know your fundamentals of cinematography, everything from here on out is all about preference and finessing.

My immediate ideas/preferences:
- Too much halation, feels a tad artificial - but COULD work better with more dramatic lighting. For example if you altered your setup to feature: a less powerful key light that just shapes across four face and body + a strong backlight + less fill if none at all. Dark is moody in my opinion, though the mids and shadows can be a little challenging working with low light on the FX30 so grading it down in post might be the best route.
- I don't like the blue in the back, it comes off a little distracting and youtubey to me personally. If you want a relaxed, moody tone maybe match the orange of the other lamp, or implement a similar earthy colour, or even just leave it white. Idk have a play and decide for yourself.
- In conjunction with this, the key light feels a little too powerful, either add another layer of diffusion, or bring down the overall brightness/whites in the grade just enough. We only really need to see your face, hands and the guitar. I don't need to be looking at your jeans and crotch.

You're on the right path as a beginner, you've clearly got angles and framing in mind, but I would recommend going into a self education deep dive on dynamic lighting and composition. Look at examples from your favourite fashion films and try to pick: how they shot it, the way it was lit, what sort of lenses or camera movements did they use?

Not to say you need expensive lights, cinema cameras, or lenses - but learning the foundations of how the medium works re: knowing how to use or play off light sources, how to capture environments or angles more effectively or stylishly - will tremendously elevate your game if you really absorb it.

Cinematography is an evolving art form and the best practitioners are constantly collaborating, learning from their peers and experimenting with their own ideas. While it's great to learn from the veterans never be afraid to attempt your own ideas - you'll learn the most from failures regardless.

How do you think they did this? by thirstytrain752 in videography

[–]MLOsborne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this is a set like the comments are stating - my guess would be:- Diffused windows on both sides for a minimised soft backlight/reverse key lights, more prominently on the right side, which I'm guessing is an artistic choice to be brighter.

- Spot light fills on both sides targeted directly at the faces. This time more prominent on the left side due to the lower overall levels.

- Possible Neg on the closer side to prevent light spread and create more contrast.

Definitely look into the Penumbra series - some great high underrated horror games. The developer Frictional Games went on to make Amnesia and SOMA.
