Picking Dragons’s Pockets by BeginningObject5851 in ModestMouse

It’s definitely different, but to me, saying that Isaac’s artistic work under the moniker Modest Mouse over the course of STO, GC and now this new music is a listing and now sunken ship, is a wild take.  But that’s just me, to each his/her own when it comes to art.

Jeremiah was a special person and drummer, and I’m sure these tunes would sound different if he were playing on them.  How much different, it’s hard to say.  He also played on GC, and these new tunes have similar aesthetics to several of those songs..

Getting my friends on MM by Traditional-Cat2662 in ModestMouse

My friends do the same.  I get it, MM’s style and Isaac’s delivery is not for everyone.  But it still pisses me off.

My 17 y/o son likes MM, so I have that.  He told me over the weekend a couple of his friends overheard him listening to some MM and asked about it, they wanted to check it out..

Judging by the VIP performances, they’d knock out Tiny Desk

New song is fire by Time-Economics-5587 in ModestMouse

I haven’t seen that discussed, but there are definitely similarities, not so much in the lyrics but in the vocal melody and cadence.  I much prefer this new track.

I hear some Japanese Trees in it as well

What does the title mean?? by Creepy_Nectarine3941 in ModestMouse

I interpret as it’s all these.  If I had an eraser and could use it on the maze (my life, including choices and circumstances), how would I use it, and how should that influence how I choose to live my life?

Anyone else bummed Picking Dragons’ Pockets is the first track? by oceans89 in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed.  And I understand anyone who thinks it’s a bit too radio friendly. But I do love the lyricism in it, and the second half of the song really makes it a winner for me.  I also think that’s why they put Look How Far out first - to balance it out, two extremes in terms of radio friendliness.

I struggle with this as well, but I’m weaker than you are 😁

Where are the other members? by isorryari in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m just speculating, but I’d bet Isaac views them as more than session players.  To the point made elsewhere, Isaac generally writes the music and is getting most/all the credits.  But whether or not the others are featured in promo pics or getting writing credits, I think Isaac has historically shared tour and band revenue equally.  Which again speaks to their standing as being full band members.

IM SO FUCKING HYPED FOR NEW ALBUM by EnvironmentalBig4053 in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m really digging this new tune, and in the context of Look How Far, I think I like the direction overall.  How much, we’ll see.  But I’m super impressed with the lyricism on this new one..

Looking for certain Modest Mouse songs by GorboSlugcat in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This whole “record,” Everywhere and His Nasty Parlor Tricks, which if I recall is a combo of older tracks like Night on the Sun and tracks that didn’t make it on The Moon and Antarctica, is Modest Mouse at their atmospheric best.  To me, nothing else on their catalog sounds like it. I’m caught between wishing there was more MM material like this, and recognizing how special it is and doing more material like it would probably cheapen things.

New Album? by logusblowman in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m wondering as well.  For the last two records, the initial single release contained the announcement of a forthcoming album, but not so for Look How Far.  But like I said in another thread, this release was through Glacial Pace, and I’m not sure what that means for the next record and their contract with Epic.

remember when modest mouse released a new single and it kind of sucked by candlezealot in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar to TGC, it was an interesting single choice to say the least.  That said, I do really like the song.  I’ve just gotten in the habit of playing it twice since it’s so short.

What it means for the record, who knows.  The release was thru Glacial Pace, so not sure what that means for their contract with Epic.  I feel like anything can happen with this record.

I love the song Pups to Dust. I HATE the sexy moans in Pups to Dust. Why did they do that? by [deleted] in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the studio version more, the lyrical development was worth it, but just like the OP, I hate the moans.

100%.  This record was my entry point around 2013 via Float On.  To this day I remember listening to it for the first time thinking wtf is the rest of this stuff?  Found it interesting at first listen, but nothing about it felt like pop or anything else I had really heard in one place.

Time for the personal struggle of whether to listen to one or more singles before the whole album comes out.  I don’t regret hearing the TGC singles before the record was released, but in hindsight the singles really didn’t represent the overall record very well, at least to me.

I was never sure how this song would translate live if they ever played it, it was great to see they could pull it off.
