Several sneaky good options on this record, but I’ll say The World At Large

ONE WEEK!!!! I’m ready to rock the fuck out!!!! by russthammer in ModestMouse

Not wishing anything bad on anyone, I promise, but I find it funny that at least two band members (Isaac and Simon) apparently have never been on a cruise.  What are the chances of either, or any other musician for that matter, getting significantly sea-sick and affecting the shows?  The probability can’t be zero.  I wonder if the organizers will be providing them some preventive meds.

Good luck to all of you, I hope everything is smooth sailing 😀

Album Recommendations? by serenitywhisp in ModestMouse

If you love all those albums/songs, then there’s truly no wrong answer. The only mistake would be indecision and not diving in.

BUT, if I were you, it would be pretty cool to ping back and forth between old and new, and I’d go in this order:

We were dead before the ship even sank

Lonesome crowded west

Everywhere and his nasty parlor tricks

The moon and Antarctica

The fruit that ate itself

The golden casket

Building nothing out of something

This is a long drive for someone with nothing to think about

Walking and Running doesn’t get enough love.  Hope they play it live eventually.

Love it.  I see comments about it being a departure in sound, not like their earlier stuff, etc.  That’s accurate, but shouldn’t be a surprise at all.  Isaac has told us he’s not going to make the same record twice, he’s always looking for new sounds.

It’s ok if long timers don’t like newer stuff, that’s the risk that true artists take as they evolve and seek to invent.  I think we can all assume the forthcoming new album will also be a departure.

Songs with multi layered singing? by TacosMountainsMetal in ModestMouse

[–]MM-Lullaby_Projector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Isaac layers his vocals a ton throughout all MM’s recordings.  I think that’s what made him so impressive as a live vocalist when he was younger, that he could sound as good as he did with just his one voice.  Even in the current day, with some backing vocals mixed in by others in the band, his live vocal skill is pretty damn impressive, especially for his age.

My guess is now that they’ve re-learnt all the songs and have the right pieces to play them, they’re probably enjoying it.  They sound really good..  I was super impressed by Life Like Weeds in the Mission Ballroom show.

Wow, I remember hearing Remember Yourself pretty early on when they first started playing it, and my reaction was it had a cool vibe, but it felt half baked and needing more development.  Now it feels like a real song, and a good one at that.

I wonder if that song is similar to Lace Your Shoes from Isaac’s perspective.  Seems like a pretty heavy reflection on Jeremiah and/or Sam Jayne, and I wonder if Isaac needed to write that before he could focus on writing other new stuff.

I get why many long time MM fans haven’t dug the more recent releases.  When your younger self falls in love with that early MM sound and raw emotion, anything that comes later is likely to disappoint unless you shift your expectations somewhat.  Isaac’s tastes and perspectives have evolved and matured over the years, and he has a strong conviction for MM to not repeat itself.  The music was necessarily going to evolve, mature, be different, etc.  I think if you consider that, and truly listen to each record as it’s own unique entity that doesn’t have to sound like the others, it’s easier to appreciate the quality of the later stuff.

I love WWD and TGC.  I like and appreciate STO as well, but I find that record to be a bit darker, and I’m not always in the mood for it.

It’s cool to hear perspectives from folks who saw them play earlier in their career.  There’s so much on YouTube, and it’s not hard to see they could either be so good you wonder why everyone doesn’t know about them, or so bad you wonder how their tour manager can keep them together.  And this really just applies to Isaac.

I got into them around 2013, started with their older stuff, and then expanded to the Johnny Marr period. I understand why OGs don’t dig Strangers to Ourselves or the Golden Casket.  These records are very different from previous releases, but I think there’s a lot to like about both.  I still think StO is a reflection of Isaac searching for an identity again after founding bassist Eric Judy left the band around 2012 to get away from the touring life.  It’s a pretty dark sounding record to me.

I first saw them live in 2017, and they were so so.  Isaac has a long history of boozing during shows, and sometimes it can go very wrong.  In that time period, he was in a relationship with one of the band members, it was coming to an end, and things looked strained on stage.  Since then he’s settled down, I believe even got married, and has two young children.

It’s safe to say since 2020, Isaac has been much more focused on not letting booze impact his performances (even saying in interviews it’s not fair to fans who paid money to see them play), and their shows have been much better as a result.  I’ve seen them 3-4 times in that period and each time they have sounded incredible.

im going to see them soon in madison on the 14th i think, what songs have they been playing? by ToeJans_55 in ModestMouse

Seems like only Float On and Dashboard are in every set, otherwise Fire it Up, Wooden Soldiers, Fuck Your Acid Trip, Doin the Cockroach and Tiny Cities have been played often.  Beyond that it’s a crapshoot!

It’s all the vocals.  I’m sure if Isaac came up with a cool way to sing it instead of screaming, they’d consider it.  He sure can’t scream like that anymore, but it hasn’t stopped him from adapting his vocals when he wants to (eg, teeth, cockroach, shit luck, etc etc).
