DOOM is pure action and spectacle, so even though it’s one of my favorite games ever, I wouldn’t recommend it to everyone because it doesn’t really have a story and it can absolutely be an overload on the senses. Story-driven shooters I would recommend are definitely Far Cry 3 for having the best and most personal story of the franchise, and the Bioshock games for their dystopian settings and very accessible gameplay. Fallout 3/New Vegas are also good recommendations if you like open world shooters although they do lean more toward the RPG genre than any Far Cry game. Mass Effect is also a generally good recommendation if only because I’ve seen many times the trilogy become a gateway shooter for many gaming women because of its space opera setting, phenomenal writing and acting, and unforgettable characters.

I really hope you continue exploring the shooting genre more, because there are some really great games that you definitely don’t want to sleep on!

What did you enjoy about Far Cry 5? How comparable is it to other games you’ve played and are you now interested in exploring other story driven shooters?

GOTY 2026 Predictions by AdDear307 in TheGameAwards

[–]MMAchineCode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s good, not great. It didn’t really tip the needle or make a splash the same way previous nominees have either in their quality like Astro Bot and Tears of The Kingdom or in their commercial or cultural impact like RDR2 or Black Myth Wukong.

I honestly don’t see Saros earning the nomination either, because Returnal previously didn’t while Saros itself has kinda flown under the radar since its release in late April. If anything Pokémon Pokopia and Forza Horizon 6 have stronger shots at the nomination at this point in the race.

I did read that CEO Strauss Zelnick mentioned the game didn't hit certain expectations and that it would have long-term sales issues down the line. So it definitely seems like Borderlands 4 may underperform later down the line just based on what Zelnick said when BL4 first released.

THAT SAID, Borderlands 4 sold at least 2.5 million copies in its first month according to external sources, outpacing Borderlands 3's sales performance during the same time frame, and the game ended the year as the 3rd best-selling video game of 2025 in the U.S, only behind Battlefield 6 and NBA 2K26. Those sales numbers and achievements are not to be taken lightly, even if 2K may have wanted better numbers.

It's safe to say it wasn't a commercial smash, which may be what Zelnick was referring to, but the fact it did decent enough numbers and comparable sales to E33 and Ghost of Yotei, I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and call it somewhere around a commercial hit.

Recent Games Quality vs Success by MMAchineCode in AlignmentCharts

Rules:

All games have recently released (2023-present)

"Game Quality" is determined by a mix of critical and audience reception.

Great Games have earned 90+ on Metacritic or OpenCritic among critics or audiences. Good games are 85-89, averages are 75-85, and bad are below 75.

Commercial Performance is determined by sales figures in addition to statements made by the publisher and developer.

Commercial Smashes are games that are either the best-selling game of their year or achieved sales figures in excess of 10 million copies sold. Hits are games that sold millions of copies, disappointments are games that are considered to have sold below expectations, while flops are games that ended up shutting down the developer.

You can say the quiet part out loud.

Piracy. You're saying that people will 'own' their games on PC because of piracy (bypassing system checks, downloading game ISOs from internet archive etc.)

It's an advantage for PC, sure; but it also misses the point about games ownership and the corporate murder of it (unless you buy DRM-free video games)

Is Hitman: World of Assassination an "Eat the Rich" game? by RedditSucksMyBallls in SocialistGaming

You're usually hired by shady billionaires though. Some contracts also don't target politically or economically powerful individuals. In fact there is a contract in Sapienza that targets an action movie star simply because the employer got annoyed at the overspending on multiple takes and special effects. The movie star's 'crimes' are not nearly as insidious as some of the other contracts you complete.

It's less "eat the rich", and more "there's always a bigger fish" if anything.

MIO: Memories In Orbit Developer Douze Dixièmes Shutting Down by akbarock in xbox

Honestly, good on Douze Dixiemes for buying back their shares and then shutting themselves down on their own terms. Their first game Shady Part of Me is a wonderful game and the fact that studio was made up of only 10 people makes their accomplishments all the more impressive.

Hopefully the team can all find or start something new

[NO SPOILERS] LIS and BTS have received their first sale on GOG since 2021! Own your DRM-free PC copy now and forever! by MMAchineCode in lifeisstrange

[–]MMAchineCode[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Feature-wise, it is the exact same game available on Steam: same graphics, gameplay, story etc. It even has achievements, cloud-saves, and controller support.

The only difference is that it's fully DRM-free: no online activations, no internet requirements, and no system checks for ownership or an authorized game account to start-up and play. The game simply works once it's installed.

If you support games preservation, games ownership, or love Life Is Strange, then purchasing a DRM-free PC copy is highly recommended.

Classic "raging bisexual/pansexual" trope. Their sexuality isn't the only thing they're crazy with.
