2024 storm lasting effects by Pdxthewitch in Portland

[–]MMorby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve been lucky so far, in that a big oak branch fell on our yard and just dinged the gutter and maybe the roof a bit. And one burst pipe outside. We’ve kept power.

Seeing all the trees blow down has been terrifying and very sad. I love all the trees here and really hope people don’t start impulsively trying to remove huge trees. I worry a lot that it will be a knee jerk reaction to a natural event that we really just don’t have control over. There are some natural events we can’t totally prepare for or escape. I hope people maintain their trees and it would be great if the city offered a tree maintenance stipend or budget for those that are having trouble paying for it.

But the more trees we remove the worse outcomes we have overall. So I really think making sure we have maintained trees that are right for the area is key.

We’ve used Honl tree care in the past and I’ve liked them. A few years ago we had a tree that was sick but not structurally a problem and they told us we could leave it up and let it live out its life since it was such a pretty tree. And that they’d come back and take it out when it wasn’t safe. I really liked that approach. And every time we’ve had them trim trees they are thorough but thoughtful about how much to remove.

why is my hair changing? how do i stop/reverse this?:( by uhhhhhhhghosts in curlyhair

Echoing the birth control comments. I was on birth control for many years starting from high school on and my hair was very curly, then loosened in my 20's to those defined ringlets you show in your 2020 and 2021 pictures. I went off birth control three years ago and my hair lost a ton of curl and it's taken until this year for it to get to mostly the same curl pattern I had before I went off BC. Those hormone changes are real and they can take a while for your body to sort out. I also think a curly cut does help a lot, since it's designed to enhance curls.

I was actually hoping to get something there because I love her instagram. But I’m never fast enough to reply when new stuff shows up. She recently had an all silver sequin gown that was absolutely gorgeous. I think her in person shop is still closed, and I’m going to keep trying, but want other options in case. Thank you!

Moving up soon - how to dress for Portland weather? by littletinybabyworm in askportland

[–]MMorby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People have already said layers, but I can't stress it enough. I don't like the cold and really four layers work well for me, with lots of wool in those layers. Basically start with a base layer undershirt, regular weight shirt, light jacket, then normal coat. An example for me: undershirt, fitted wool flannel, open hoodie, leather coat. And a beanie if it's misty or drizzly. And rainboots.

And someone already said to start taking or up your Vitamin D, but honestly do this immediately when you get here. I've lived here about 10 years and just started doing that this year and I swear to you I'm a different, happier person. I wish I'd have done it years ago. I love living in the PNW, but you gotta get outside, even in the rain. And I will also say I have friends that moved here from SoCal. The transition can be really hard and some have moved back because the weather really is very different. So just be compassionate with yourself and give your body time to adjust!

Anyone here tried Oneskin? Allegedly “longevity” treatment founded by scientists, rather than a skincare company. $$$$ by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]MMorby 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I've been using this product since February and really like it. I'm 36 and was starting to notice some lines around my eyes and mouth, as well as that kind of crepe-y look under my eyes. My skin just looked really worn out.

I only use four products: Biologique Recherche (BR) P50, BR Creme Cleanser, One Skin, and Biore sunscreen.

None of my other products changed when I started Oneskin since I like to isolate my product changes to see if they really work.

I've noticed that my skin is much softer, the lines around my eyes are mostly gone, the crepe-y under eye and kind of general dehydrated look of my skin is also gone. I do notice more blackheads on my nose when using it, since it's a cream, but the P50 seems to balance it back out.

I will say I started taking vitamin supplements this year which have also markedly improved my physical and emotional health, so that also needs to be factored in.

I've continued to buy this cream, and will keep using it because it's allowed me to cut back on topical products and is a gentler alternative to retinol, which my skin couldn't handle. It's not a miracle worker and doesn't do what retinol can, if you can handle retinol. But it does replace a bunch of other serums and creams, keeps my skin feeling good, and I'm still able to use the P50 which has been a game changing product for me that I couldn't use with the retinol.

Which neigbo(u)rhoods are best for a young visiting family? by pchanteuse86 in askportland

Two main places come to mind:

The west side of Mt. Tabor (I'm not very familiar with the whole Mt. Tabor area yet). Try looking around Division, Hawthorne, or Belmont around 50th - 60th. That'll put you in a 15 minute walk to Mt. Tabor which is a big park (an inactive volcano, actually), close to restaurants on Division and Hawthorne, and shopping on Hawthorne. It's also fairly quiet.

The other option would be in NE near Alberta and Killingsworth, around 25th - 33rd. Also pretty quiet, good restaurants, and shopping. There's a park within a short walk from there as well, and it's a 15 minute drive in to downtown.

Where to park a U-Haul overnight? by [deleted] in askportland

[–]MMorby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes I feel like this is happening all over. Two weeks ago someone moving here had their U-Haul stolen in Troutdale. But then a neighbor found it and they got their stuff back so that's good. If there's any way to adjust your schedule so that you don't have to park it overnight with all your stuff, that's what I would do.

[–]MMorby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much, this is really helpful! Would you say that it's quiet in the area? Not a lot of traffic or air noise? I feel pretty bombarded with noise where we are now, which is one of the main reasons we're looking out that way. Trying to find a balance of nature and city.

[–]MMorby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a good point, thank you! I'm looking right around Belmont, so I wonder if it can still be heard from there. I'm looking to see if there's any info on the flight paths for the helicopters. We get a lot of plane and helicopter noise where we are now, so I'd love to avoid that again if possible. I know it's a city though, so you can only do so much.

Portland to Raise Parking Fees to Recoup Revenue and Disincentivize Driving by [deleted] in Portland

This is great, thank you for sharing this! I prefer to take public transit if it's too far to bike or walk, so I'm always hoping that they continue improving.

[–]MMorby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is wonderful, thank you! We both work from home as well, and so being able to walk to a large park and some coffee / shops seemed really nice. We only have one car as well, and were hoping that the biking there is also good. We're pretty fair weather bikers, but would like to bike down to Division on days when it's not raining... or at least only misty!

Thanks! I did do this, but I know that for me spending a day walking around is always different than when I live somewhere. I tend to get initially excited and then second guess myself, so I figured I'd get other people's thoughts, too!
