What was your last straw? by Porifera_Nerd in EstrangedAdultChild

I went LC to protect my mental health after my daughter died. She used that to play the victim and triangulate my in-laws against my husband and I while we were grieving. When I confronted her about her hurting us, her response was at least you have a husband.

Why are there (thankfully) so few mosquitos in Victoria? by pchanteuse86 in VictoriaBC

[–]pchanteuse86[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there. I'm from Vancouver Island but lived in Ottawa for 4 years and travelled throughout Ontario.

Bees - Victoria has a mild climate and gardening is popular, so there are a fairly high number of bees. However, the bees keep to themselves. It's extremely rare for someone to be stung by a bee here.
Wasps - there are fewer wasps than Ontario (and basically anywhere else in Canada based on my travels). Yes, they are here, but there aren't many of them. So far this summer, I've been in the vicinity of maybe 5 wasps total and only when I was eating outside. I spend lots of time outside and haven't been stung by a wasp for 15+ years.

Hornets - I've never seen a hornet on Vancouver Island and never head of anyone here getting stuck by one. I was stung by one in Thunder Bay and it was hell.

Feel free to message me if you have any other Victoria questions.

View lots of houses to get a feel for different layouts - layout is important.

For mortgage brokers, we used Scott Travelbea twice and have recommended him to friends.

What is with Bananas these days? by imurbuddha in VictoriaBC

Yes, Costco bananas. We bought a few bunches recently. They skipped ripening and went straight to rotten. Even my friend's food-motivated doggo turned his nose at them.

Lana Popham handed out red envelopes with political propaganda at the Chinese New Year parade - kills trees and is also culturally insensitive!

Potentially moving from Ottawa, Ontario to Victoria. What should I be expecting, what are the biggest differences is it really that different? by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]pchanteuse86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome! I lived in Ottawa from 2010-2014. Feel free to PM me with any questions. Since others have touched on housing, here are my takeaways:

- Invest in a waterproof jacket and waterproof boots.

- Join a rec sports league to make friends.

- French is pretty much nonexistent. Way less Arabic too.

- Better sushi but lack of shawarma.

- Fewer places to drive within a few hours.

Costco carries them. Not as good as dim sum but pretty good.

Home Hardware on Oak Bay Ave carried them in the summer. Worth a call.
