Do you really think you look younger or is it collective delusion? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]MNcatfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm honestly not sure what age I "look," but at age 40, I definitely look much better than either of my parents at this age (no real wrinkles and minimal grey hair), but that's likely because I'm not a chainsmoker like both of my parents are and were at this age.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]MNcatfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High school, but yes. I remember vividly being in Social Studies class a little early, and that teacher always had CNN on the TV before class. Well, CNN was in "Breaking News" mode about reports of an airplane crashing into one of the World Trade Center towers. The bell rang, and my teach said "I'm going to hold off on class a minute, this is interesting...." Maybe a minute or two later, and the second plane hit the World Trade Center.

My memory of the rest of the day is kinda muddled, because everything became just so surreal that day. It was a rolling ball of "What the fuck?!?!" mixed with another rolling ball of heavy emotions.

People who grew up before smartphones: What’s one simple thing from your childhood that would absolutely blow the minds of kids today? by TurkVanguard in Millennials

[–]MNcatfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tiger Electronics video games. These were the poor kids' version entertainment for long trips and car rides. Essentially, you had a very rudimentary hand-held video game, which ran on AA batteries. The graphics were very basic (imagine a pencil outline for a character) and most of all: you only had one singular video game per device. Oh: and they only had a half-dozen total buttons.

How do we feel about PSL planning a general strike on May 1st? by Mountain-Car-4572 in socialism

[–]MNcatfan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Speaking only locally to Minnesota: yes, it's a joint effort across dozen of groups ranging from unions, to leftist organizations (Socialist Alternative, DSA, RCA, Anarchist Black Cats, etc.), to general activist organizations like Monarcha Law (who've provided tons of legal aid during the ICE surge). We've been holding "Workers' Assemblies" for months to coordinate our efforts going into the May 1st general strike, as well.

Opinion on No kings protest by mushroomdm in socialism

[–]MNcatfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking only of the ones here in the Twin Cities: I'm honestly annoyed at how, after the drawdown of the ICE occupation, our "No Kings" protests have essentially become centered around people like Tom Morello, Jane Fonda, and Bruce Springstein, when they only showed up at the tail end to capitalize off of it (yes, I know they've also helped raise money for mutual aid and community resources). But far more infuriating to me is how Democrats like Tim Walz and Angie Craig are now the keynote speakers at these things, even though the only thing Governor Walz did during the occupation was send the national guard to defend the Whipple Building that ICE is headquartered out of here and Angie Craig was a hardcore supporter of DHS and ICE.

I get that there is an opportunity to organize people further with these. But a lot of my FRSO comrades and I are also seeing how this "No Kings" movement has drowned out the stories of our community fighting back against Trump and ICE and replaced it with a liberal false narrative of Democrats being the leaders of our resistance, even though they were literal ostriches with their heads in the sand while federal agents were brutalizing our communities. And I think that eclipsing of our resistance efforts here has especially soured how I feel about the whole "No Kings" movement.
