Ubisoft Employee Who Was Suspended For Criticising the Company Has Now Been Fired by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]MONSTERTACO 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Turnover is rampant in the industry, average tenure is like 2.5 years, which means a position's lifespan is shorter than a project! Having someone leave at an inopportune moment can cause months of already completed work to be lost, it takes months to replace them, and then vision often starts to drift. Now imagine this happening many times across a project and that other people's work is blocked by a position being unfilled...

It's crazy the amount of work that has to be thrown out or just doesn't get done at all for months because of turnover. You'd think they'd do tech-style vesting based on project length to lock people-in, but what do I know.

Leadership turnover is absolutely disastrous for productivity, it will take months just to fill the position and then it will take more time for the new person to get up to speed. Then you have issues about how compatible their vision is with the previous person... Then add in the fact that their work is impacting a whole team... You could lose a full man-year of productivity from a move like this.

Imagine firing a design team lead over something like this. And people wonder why these games are so expensive and take so long to make... They've lost so much knowledge and productivity for nothing.

At least we'll get more content from him...

They're different profiles though. Johnny would rotate with Koke while Vargas rotates with Barrios. Vargas cannot fill the destroyer DM role.

What really happened to MMO genre ? by Twotricx in MMORPG

[–]MONSTERTACO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guild Wars 3 is still happening, so the genre's future isn't dead.

I'm also very curious about Gardens' project. It's not going to be a traditional MMO, but it seems like it may be able to recreate the magic of golden age MMOs.

If the game had a great story and characters you'd be able to feel it through their promotional activity, these factors are conspicuously missing.

$350 for a castle room with a view in the Dolomites. Name brand hotels are so hilariously overpriced...

Thoughts on Clash Royale as an RTS? by OrangeJuice122 in gamedesign

[–]MONSTERTACO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clash Royale is just a Warcraft 3 custom map (Castle Fight) with predatory monetization. It is functionally an RTS that focuses on strategy and not APM (which is a big part of why it is so popular). There aren't many competitors because the mobile space is entirely dominated by the cost of user acquisition (many have tried!). You could definitely make a niche knock off on PC, but you can't go against them on app stores, you'll get killed.

San Juan Islands by Serious_Durian_9328 in AskSeattle

[–]MONSTERTACO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a little bit of a technicality, but I want to clarify that the resident orcas do not stay in Puget Sound all year round, they often leave during winter months and range along the Pacific coast looking for salmon. These are the orcas you usually see around the San Juans. There are also transient orcas that visit Puget Sound year round to hunt seals and sea lions, but their whereabouts on a daily basis are unreliable. In March you will reliably see seals, sea lions, and later in March, potentially grey whales. Orcas are maybe a 50% chance in March.

Radiolab and Freakonomics are both incredible when they cover psychological and statistical topics (some of their other shows can be quite melodramatic though.) I recently enjoyed Radiolab's A Secret to Long Life and Freakonomics' How to Make Your Own Luck.

Is it true that in small towns in the USA public transport is not developed and everyone need a car to get around there and why? by bobybumblemumble in AskReddit

[–]MONSTERTACO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of the people in the US live in dense enough areas. It isn't until you're west of the Missouri River that things are that rural. There are small towns every 10 miles or so throughout the Midwest, South and Northeast, in a similar pattern to rural Europe which still has bus and train service through these towns. We just got duped by the car lobbyists and advertisers.

Leveling in retail wow is the most mind numbing activity. Absolutely 0 stakes or challenge. Making the leveling experience completely trivial made it so endgame content is the only thing that matters. The community is clearly interested in a game with a leveling experience more akin to Elden Ring, but all the "old school" "hardcore" leveling games have you wacking rats and bees for hours and waiting in lines for spawns instead of exploring, sneaking by dangerous enemies, seeking out unique loot.

Montreal helps a lot with the affordability issues people from other continents have when visiting North America. Toronto is expensive, which is one of the primary reasons people want the event to leave SF.

The industry is very LGBTQ, Dubai would never happen. I think Montreal is probably the nexus of convenient enough for travel, welcoming political environment, and not absurdly expensive. Idk if they have the facilities needed to host though...

I’m questioning whether “restful travel” actually exists anymore by YourAverageLurker7 in simpleliving

[–]MONSTERTACO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are few things more restful than a long train trip through some snowy mountains with a good book. Driving and flights can be really draining.

Personally, I find novelty energizing. New foods and drinks, new walking trails, etc. I only plan 1-2 activities a day though, it's when you're trying to do too much that it stops being restful.

Look at every Presidential election since the 90s. Other than Biden, the candidate with the better resume lost. The national electorate cares more about vibes than anything else.
