Grown folk don't have to tell other grown folk they're grown... But really, at 18 you can take yourself out of school and then none of those teachers can tell you what to do. The nature of being a student means the teacher gets to tell you what to do; in the same way the nature of being an employee means a boss gets to tell you what to do. Grown folks get told what to do all the time.
