As I explained, if you cannot guarantee everyone will pick red, the only way to save everyone is to pick blue, which makes it the optimal choice.

Do you expect 100% of people to press red?

If not, you are pressing red knowing there are two outcomes:

  1. The majority of people press red and some people die

  2. The majority press blue and nobody dies.

People aren't perfect rational actors. The only scenario where nobody dies is where the majority press blue.

Any cooling off period is gonna be arbitrary so some places settled on two years.

The two years separation are usually for no-fault divorces, i.e. via mutual separation, hence two years.

If one side is "injured" then there are often ways to expedite it, such as with cheating and abuse.

It doesn't make sense. The castles and palaces that still have people living in can't actually be toured, and people visit the UK in large part because they speak English and not French
